b. Location & Activities of Units:
The 23rd Inf Regt, on 21 Sep 50, was ordered to retreat across the NAKTONG River at TABU DONG.
The Regt left about 200 troops at TABU DONG to cover their retreat.
Hearsay: The PW heard (rumor among troops) that the Regt was going to retreat up to MUNGYONG.
c. Personal & Unit History:
Conscripted 4 Jul 50 at PYONGYANG NAMDO, KAEC’HON with 1800 others. Between 4 Jul 50 to 24 Jul 50, the newly-inducted troops received basic training (no weapons).
Departed KAEC’HON 23 Jul 50 by train and marches and arrived INDONG 17 Sep 50.
On 21 Sep 50, the PW’s company was ordered to cover the 23rd Inf Regt’s retreat at TABU DONG. On 23 Sep 50, the PW and five (5) others surrendered to US troops.
d. Replacements:
The PW was one of 1800 replacements who arrived at the 23rd Inf Regt from PYONGYANG on 17 Sep 50.
e. Food & Ammo:
The PW, for two (2) weeks prior to capture, had one (1) meal a day.
Each man had about 50 rounds (possibly less) of small arms ammo.
Unit did not receive fresh supplies since 17 Sep 1950.
A large percentage of the troops were not armed.
f. Morale:
Morale is very low because of the following reasons:
(1) Troops feel that they will lose the war.
(2) Lack of weapons & ammo.
(3) Lack of food & rest.
(4) Inexperienced troops.
