FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0886) 23 September 1950

2. ASSESSMENT:
Sincere and very cooperative, but has only limited information. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
3 Mar 50 at SINUIJU (新義州) PW was inducted into the Army. Departed with 400 men for P'YONGYANG 27 Mar 50 and arrived on 28 Mar 50. Left on 28 Mar 50 for CHINNAMP'O (鎭南浦) and arrived 29 Mar 50. PW and 200 men were then sent back to P'YONGYANG the following day. Assigned to the 4th Div, 5th Regt, Signal Co. Basic training until 31 May 50. PW with 8 others were assigned to his present unit 17 Jun 50.
18 Jun 50 started for YONGCH'ON (永川) by trucks - arrived 19 Jun 50. Took cover in the hills until 24 Jun 50. Crossed 38th parallel 25 Jun 50. Headed for SEOUL. Left SEOUL 5 Jul 50 for TAEJON via SUWON and P'YONGTAEK. Arrived TAEJON 17 Jul 50. Heavy aircraft attack at TAEJON. Left TAEJON 18 Jul 50 on foot for HYOPCH'ON via KUMSAN (錦山) and KOCH'ANG (居昌), arriving in early Aug 50. Div fought its way down to CH'OGYE (草溪) and crossed the NAKTONG River 12 Aug 50. 4th Div then fought its way to YONGSAN when unit was pushed back across the NAKTONG River. PW gave himself up 20 Sep 50.

Equipment:
Observed 4 × 45mm M1942 AT guns and 10 × 76mm guns M1939 on the W side of the NAKTONG River.

Disposition:
9th Div and the 4th Div plus the 16th Brigade crossed the NAKTONG River together. The 18th Regt is the only unit of the 4th Div still located on the East side of the NAKTONG River 20 Sep 50.

Communications:
Roads fair. Signal corp men kept busy repairing telephone lines.

Morale & propaganda:
1. Dyed in the wool communists are still willing to fight to the finish. About 50% of troops who are not communists are willing to lay down their arms if given a chance.
2. Morale is very low and the communists are always on the alert for any sign of weakness. Food situation very critical. PW surrendered with a “Safe Conduct Pass”.
3. Most feared weapons are fighter aircraft and tanks.
4. Anyone caught with a “Safe Conduct Pass” on his person is shot on the spot. All leaflets are gathered up by sqd ldrs and torn up.
5. The most common disease among NK troops is “stomach aches”. Malaria is also prevalent and pneumonia cases are very high. Medical supplies are practically non-existent for front line troops.
