ASSESSMENT:
PW was sincere but lacked information.

T/O & E OF 849 UNIT, ENGINEER COMPANY:
The 849th Unit was activated in PYONGYANG, Aug 50, and was committed to action, 20 km north of WAEGWAN. It consisted of the following: Infantry company, engineer company, HMG platoon, AT platoon, and a Recon platoon. The entire 849th unit’s strength was approximately 400 men.

DISPOSITION:
The 849th Unit was last seen digging in on a hill in YANKMOK, near WAEGWAN.

PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted 19 Jul 50 with 280 others at PYONGYANG.
Departed PYONGYANG 5 Aug 50 by truck and arrived WAEGWAN 2 Sep 50.

ENEMY INTENTIONS:
Troops were given orders to go into defensive positions and to hold at all costs.

FOOD AND SUPPLIES:
An average of 2 meals per day were eaten by soldiers and consisted of one handful of rice per meal. Most of the food was taken from the natives.

MORALE:
Morale was low, due to insufficient food and ammo. Most of the troops in the 849th Unit have no desire to fight. PW believes that most of the men in this unit will surrender if given the opportunity.
