REPUBLIC OF KOREA
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
June 9, 1952
Dear Ben:
Your letters of May 23 and 26 arrived with the pouch on June 7. We already suspected that the pouch was purposely delayed.
We cabled you this morning to let us have the advance information in regard to the presentation of the bronze plaque presented by Korea to the United Nations. So far we know little about it and certainly should inform not only the U.N. but our local papers.
Thank you for the copy of Declaration by AFL on POW dispute.
No doubt that the news which came from Korea during the last two weeks have been a setback for us but as the President told the UN so far we have swallowed everything without making our stand clear. All those who are here must know how corrupt the Assembly is and the fact that USA and UN are protecting those who have admitted to have taken bribes for the coming presidential vote will count against them sooner or later. We did not wish to advertise the corruption of our Assemblymen and the president has even ordered not to arrest those who even took bribes so long as they are not connected with the conspiracy case.
I have written very hasty notes of these concurrences and asked Philip to let you have the contents of them.
As you know it all started when the Assembly voted for the release of Assemblyman Suh Minho who shot and killed an army officer. What kind of an assembly and what kind of a supreme court is it which ordered the release of this murderer? Unfortunately the supreme judge is a member of the democratic party and so are two of the four judges on the bench.
The opposition expected a big showdown after Muccio’s arrival but as nothing happened Mr. Shin Icki finally went to Ambassador Muccio and Muccio told him how could you let it happen that the Assembly voted for the release of a murderer? The President told Muccio that the foreign powers have not only supported them but have hidden those whom we need as principal witnesses in the conspiracy case.
I wish you would contact Philip and ask him to keep you informed about the daily happenings in this regard.
Sincerely,
