Dear Doc:

Well, the events hinted at in my last several letters to you have happened! Things are in a tremendous uproar here. I have been busy night and day literally, answering correspondents’ questions (everyone of them came down to Pusan), preparing the government releases, arrainging press conferences, etc. It has been very difficult to get the newsmen to accept the P. contentions on the events that have occurred.

However, late this afternoon (during the middle of typing this) Lee Bum Suk put out a statement on the communist conspiracy-bribery plot. It is being translated right now and I will hand it out to the correspondents tonight. It is the strongest hope we have at the moment to counteract the tide of an unfavorable press. We must be able to prove conclusively that the P. has had just cause for his actions. People here, unfortunately, are not satisfied with the political philosophy-type of release and conferences which we have been using. For example, one Assemblyman was dragged away this morning in the To-chong here -- right in the presence of Rich of NBC and Keyes Beech who happened to be standing there, protesting and dragging his heels, with the MP’s shoving him along. It will be hard to “brief” the correspondents this afternoon that no force is being used and Assemblymen arn’t being arrested.

I have sent some of the releases in the pouch to Charlotte, asking her to re-type them for your and others’ guidance. I know that you will be swamped with questions. I managed to keep the lid on this thing for 48 hours, but it is a seething hotbed of journalistic eager-beavers now.

You said before I came out here that I would have an interesting time, come the elections. How right you were! Things change here every hour. And everybody wants to make a statement explaining what is happening; as a result, Clarence is counterdicting SMR and vice-versa every day.

When this is finally over, I am going to don hermit’s rags and lead a quiet life in some cave!

지난 몇 주 동안 제 편지에서 당신께 암시를 드렸던 바로 그 사건들이 일어났습니다! 이곳에서 사건들은 엄청난 파장을 불러일으키고 있습니다. 문자 그대로 밤낮으로 통신사 기자들의 질문들(이들 모두가 부산으로 왔습니다.), 정부 보도문의 준비, 언론 간담회 준비 등으로 눈코뜰 새가 없습니다. 사건이 발생했을 때, 대통령의 논점을 받아들이는데 있어 언론인으로서 매우 어려움을 느꼈습니다.

그러나 – 이 편지를 작성하고 있는 중인 – 오후 늦게, 이범석이 공산주의자들의 뇌물수수 음모에 대한 성명서를 발표했습니다. 현재 번역이 진행 중이며, 오늘밤 기자들에게 이를 건낼 것입니다. 적대적인 언론의 홍수에 대항해야 하는 바로 그 순간 우리가 가진 것은 강고한 희망입니다. 우리는 대통령이 그런 행동을 한 것에 대해 적절한 원인이 있다는 것을 결정적으로 증명해야만 할 것입니다. 불행히도 이곳의 사람들은 우리가 오랫동안 겪어 왔던 그런 종류의 정치철학적인 종류의 언론 발표나 기자회견에 탐탁치 않을 것입니다. 예를 들어, 오늘 아침 이곳 도청에서 한 국회의원이 끌려나갔습니다. 그것도 NBC와 키즈비치(Keys Beech) 퓰리처상을 수상한 언론인

샬롯에게 보내는 우편행랑 속에 보도문들을 좀 보내면서, 이를 다시 타이핑해서 당신과 다른 자문들에게 보내달라고 부탁했습니다. 나는 당신이 지금 수많은 질문들로 터저나갈 듯 하다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 나는 48시간 동안 이 사건들에 대해 함구했습니다. 그러나 이제는 게걸스러운 비버처럼 언론인으로서 뜨거운 마음이 요동치고 있습니다.

내가 한국에 부임하기 전 당신은 선거가 다가오는, 이곳에서 흥미로운 시간을 보내게 될 것이라고 이야기했지요. 얼마나 정확했는지! 이곳에서는 매시간 새로운 일들이 벌어지고 있습니다. 그리고 모든 사람들이 어떤 일이 발생했는지에 대한 성명서를 만들기를 원합니다. 그 결과 클라런스는 매일매일 이승만에 맞서기 위해서 싸우는 지경입니다(?Clarence is counterdicting SMR(이승만) and vice-versa every day.)

이 일이 최종적으로 마무리되면, 나는 고상한 은둔자의 두건을 쓰고, 어느 동굴에서 조용한 삶을 살고자 합니다.
