Limited information due to lack of education. Fairly reliable.

Military History:
Inducted 24 Sap 47 at SUAYANG, MANCHURIA, Trained as rifleman at SUAYANG, 2 months, with the 72nd Independent TUAN (團) (Regt). On Nov 47 the 72nd Ind Regt departed SUAYANG and went to CHILIN, MANCHURIA. At CHILIN the 72nd Regt engaged the Chinese Nationalist Forces. When they were not fighting they trained. Remained in CHILIN until Jul 48. From CHILIN the 72nd Ind Regt joined with the 73rd Ind Regt and departed CHILIN - marched to CHANGCH'UN (長春), China. Here at CHANGCH'UN, the 72nd and 73rd Ind Regts joined the 6th Unit composed of 3 divisions of the CCF and participated in the taking of CHANGCHUN. After the city was captured the 72nd Ind 73rd Regts remained there until 19 Jul 49, 19 Jul 49 the 72nd Ind Regt with 3 other unknown regiments were constituted a division, called the 164th Division and departed CHANGCH’UN, China by train and arrived at NANAM, (羅南) Korea on 24 Jul 49.
The 164th Div consisted entirely of Koreans, and at NANAM the 164th Div changed its designation to People’s Army 5th Div. The 72nd Regt became the 10 Regt, the other regiments changed to the 11th, 12th and Arty Regt. No artillery observed enroute from china. At NANAM, the 5th Div trained until JU11 50, PW stated on Mar 50, the 3 infantry regiments, 10th, 11th, and 12th Regts were brought up to full strength by an additional 700 men for each regiment. Whether or not the artillery regiment was expanded is unknown. The 700 man assigned to each infantry regiment were recruits.
PW stated the 5th Div departed NANAM by train on 20 Jun 50, and arrived YANGYANG (襄陽) on 27 Jun 50, passing through HAMHUNG and WONSAN (元山). The 5th Div departed YANGYANG - 27 Jun 50 - marched - arrived KANGNUNG (江陵) 30 Jun 50. At KANGNUNG the 5th Div departed, PW does not know the destination of the other regiments. The 10th Regt departed KANGNUNG - 2 Jul 50 - arrived SAMCH’OK (三德陟) - 12 Jul 50, Departed SAMCH’OK 12 Jul 50 - marched - arrived YONGDOK (盈德) o/a 25 Jul 50. At YONGDOK the 10th Regt fought for 3 days with the help of 11th Regt, PW does not know where the 11th Regt came from. After the battle of YONGDOK, the 3rd Bn moved on alone and pushed to CH'ONGSONG (1200-1500) and arrived on or about 5 Aug 50. From CH'ONGSONG they moved towards KIGYE but want to YONGDOK to occupy the town. The 7th Div was already there so the 3rd Bn moved back to CHONGSONG and arrived 15 Aug 50. From CH'ONGSONG the 3rd Bn moved to village located 6 km N of KIGYE (1210-1460). The Bn engaged ROK troops and was defeated. The Bn Commander ordered the 7th Co to Forced 2 km S of KIGYE and while in the mountain 2 km S of KIGYE, the 7th Co was surrounded by ROK troops. Some of the troops were killed, some escaped, but 27 men out of the 60 men in the 7th Co were captured, including PW.

24 Aug 50, the 7th Co received 30 replacements from N. Korea. The replacements told PW they departed WONSAN in a group, of 2,000. PW does not know how many replacements came to the 3rd Bn.
HMG Platoon had one HMG. 3 x HMG in 3rd Bn.
No equipment received since KANGNUNG, 1 Jul 50.

Supplies:
Food supply was poor, average one meal a day, usually wheat. Most of the food was brought from villages.
Last received ammunition at A ODOK TONG (1210-1470) 20 Aug 50. 2 wooden boxes of HMG ammunition.

Enemy Intentions:
Objective of 10th Regt was P’OHANG DONG (1230-1460). To be taken by 28 Aug 50.
PW stated when the 3rd Bn was ODOK TONG, PW heard from his platoon leader that the 7th Div was on the right flank of 3rd Bn 25 Aug 50.
