ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 868　2 September 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0656)　30 August 1950

PW was captured wearing civilian clothes by ROK Army patrol. Clothing issued by PW's CO before leaving unit for reconnaissance patrol. PW was unintelligent. He was fairly cooperative but appeared to know very little of his unit. PW considered fairly reliable by interrogator.

25 May 47 - Volunteered for People's Liberation Army (人民解放軍), CHIAO YANG CHIN(朝陽鎭). Received three (3) months military basic training. Assigned to People's Liberation Army, II Corps, Rear Guard Security Div, 5th Regt, 1st Co, 2nd Plt, 2nd Sqd (後勤二分部街因五連排二珌) CHAO YANG CHIN. 2nd Service composed of approximately 10,000 volunteers. 5th Co composed of 100 Korean nationals (None in other units). CO, 2nd Service Div was a Manchurian.

Aug 47 - 2nd Service Div alerted and departed (on orders from higher headquarters) from CHAO YANG CHIN.

Nov 48 - 2nd Service Div marched through SHANGHAI.

Apr 50 - 8,000 Korean Nationals serving with CCF in CHINA assembled at CHUNG CHOU (鄟州). Ordered returned to MANCHURIA. Left by rail from CHUNG CHOU under command of Korean Maj Gen (See Personalities). Three (3) days later arrived in WONSAN (元山) via SINUIJU (新義州). Small arms, LMG, HMG, mortars and ammunition were brought from CHINA with this unit.

15 Apr 50 - 8,000 Koreans activated as 7th Div (3 x Inf Regt’s identification unk) at WONSAN. Korean Maj Gen became CG, 7th Div. Three (3) weeks training. PW assigned to Recon Co 7th Div.

O/a 15 Jun 7th Div left WONSAN by rail. Arrived at KANSONG (杆城) via KOSONG. Left KANSONG on foot. Continued south along east coast to KANGNUNG (江陵) (Date arrived unk).

O/a 10 Jul 7th Div arrived at ANDONG via YONGJU (榮州) (travel route through mountains and over road). 7th Div crossed NAKTONG River during early morning while still dark at point south of ANDONG. Recon Co crossed river behind Inf. No opposition encountered during crossing operation. 1st and 2nd Inf Regt’s 7th Div continued 66 P’OHANG-DONG (1230-1460) through CH’ONG-SONG (靑松) (1200-1500) entered POHANG-DONG 4 Aug (hearsay). 1st Inf Regt later withdrew to AN’GANG-NI (1210-1450) (hearsay). 3rd Inf Regt and Recon Co continued with 7th Div Hq from NAKTONG River crossing point to PIAHK-SAN (1210-1470) (762 feet), 9 1/2 km ENE of KIGYE.

30 Jul 50 - 3rd Inf Regt and Recon Co and 7th Div Hq deployed in PIHAK-SAN woods. Moderate arty-mortar fire from US-ROK Army positions.

5 Aug 50 - 7th Div redesignated 12th Div. No troop movements observed in Div.

12 Aug 50 - 1st and 2nd Inf Regts arrived at PIHAK-SAN from AN’GAN-NI - P’OHANG-DONG Area. Rejoined 12th (former 7th) Div. US-ROK Army arty-mortar-air action against 12th Div positions on PIHAK-SAN intensified. Most casualties from arty-mortar.

13 Aug 50 - 12th Div redesignated 7th Div. No change in personal or positions of units in PIHAK-SAN. Co, Bn, and Regt designations in Div remained unchanged. PW believes changes in Div designation was to confuse US-ROK Army. 7th Div received arty support on PIHAK-SAN from 5th Div deployed in area (location unk) east of PIHAK-SAN. 2 x Howitzer similar to 122 mm M1938 Howitzer and 3 x 45 mm M1942 AT guns (truck-drawn) from 5th Div observed positioned in PIHAK-SAN woods (location unk).

26 Aug 50 - PW and 1 other soldier from Recon Co left PIHAK-SAN for AN’GANG-NI, dressed in civilian clothing and unarmed. Assignment was to reconnector US and/or ROK Army positions in AN’GANG-NI and whether they were withdrawing from the town.

28 1500 Aug PW and one (1) captured near NODANG-NI, 5 km SSE from KIGYE, by ROK Army patrol.

7th Div (1st, 2nd, 3rd Inf Regts, Recon Co) Strength 5,000. 8 x mortars similar to 120 mm M1943 Heavy mortar.

Recon Co (1st, 2nd Pits) Strength 70.
