Present Location of Unit:
At the time source was taken prisoner, Ms unit was located in KASAN DONG near CHILGOK (36° 56'N - 128 33'E). On the right of the 1st Division were the 14th and the 15th Divisions, on the left were the 7th and 8th Divisions.
In 1st Regiment of 7th Division, they had 5 J.S-1 Heavy Tanks and 2 T-34/85 Medium Tanks. The armor plate of the JS-1 is approximately 2 inches thick and it has 1 122MM Gun. The T-34/85 has a 85MM gun.

Foreign Elements:
There was a Russian advisor, rank unknown, epaulets not illustrated in Army Pamphlet No 30-2.
He wore a Russian Engineering officer’s uniform and a small medal.

Capability of Unit:
PW's unit was capable or engaging in to a full scale battle. All the personnel were well trained and disciplined.
The morale of source's unit was very high at first due to sufficient food, adequate uniforms and proper rest and sleep. On 26 June when they started to advance south from 38th parallel with TAEGU as their objective their food supplies were cut. They marched in the night and hid in the mountains during the day on account of UN Aerial attacks.

Artillery:
In 1st Division an artillery unit was directly attached for support. It had the following guns:
7 - 76MM M1943 AT guns, 4 - 100MM or 120MM AT guns, 5 - 12.7MM DSHK M1938, AA guns, all Russian make. Unknown number of 400 or 420MM AT guns (takes four men to load the gun), also Russian make.

Antiaircraft:
Source saw 12.7MM DSHK M1938 AA guns in action. They had five in all.

National. Insignia:
The North Korean National flag was carried into battlefields, 1 flag per platoon. The first unit that raised the flag in a conquered South Korean City was awarded a medal. The medal was divided into 3 classes, depending upon duty performed. Regimental colors were also carried.
There were many surrender leaflets scattered over the plain near HAMCHANG, one of which PW read. The leaflet contained an appeal by President Rhee for North Korean Army personnel to surrender. It was signed by CHONG IL KWONG. C/S ROK Army.

Naval Installations:
Source saw many North Korean sailors in NAJIN, also called RASHINDO (42° 10'N - 130° 15'E). PW suspects that a Naval Installation is somewhere in NAJIN WAN.

North Korean war preparations prior to Invasion:
On 13 June 50, in SHIPYOL (little village north of the 38th parallel) they were given helmets, 70 rounds of rifle ammunition, and personal necessities. They were supposed to go on night warfare training, but instead they were marched further south, closer to the 38th parallel, and bivouaced there until 26 June 50. On 13 June 50 PW suspected that they would go into war sooner or later.

Prisoners of the North Korean Army:
PW was hospitalized. in the same hospital with some South Korean soldiers who had been taken prisoner. They were given the same treatment and ate the same kind of food. He did not see any American soldiers, but heard that they had captured some.

Comments:
PW was very cooperative and answered all questions. He seems to be of higher intelligence than most of the PWs.

Signed: TARKENTON/WALKER
