2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. Seemed to have given info to the best of his knowledge. Info herein is considered reliable.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
1930: Completed 6 years of education (primary school). Entered school at about the age of 11, Began working in a garage, and learned Auto Repair and Driving.
1939: Left for MUTANCHIANG (牡丹江) MANCHURIA, and worked as a truck driver.
Feb 42: Left for YENSHOU-HSIEN (延壽縣) MANCHURIA, and worked as a farmer. Reason for leaving - economic and personal hardships.
18 Nov 46: Joined the Communist sponsored "Commercial and Industrial Union" (高工同盟) since he had a knowledge of auto repair and driving. Upon joining, PW was sent to work at HARBIN (哈爾濱) with a verbal province of being returned to his family (wife and 2 children) in 6 months time.
15 May 47: After the 6 months time, instead of being sent back to his home, PW was conscripted into the "Volunteers’ Army" and was in a Unit which was composed of about 1,000 Koreans who had been conscripted from various places. This military unit was known as the "Korean Volunteers’ Army," 3rd Sub-unit (朝鮮 義勇軍 第三支隊). Received no training and was assigned as a truck driver in the motor unit of this outfit.
May 48: Left HARBIN for PEICHEN (北鎭). Transferred to the Motor Battalion of the CCF 46th Army Hq with duty as a truck driver.
Sep 48: Moved to CHINCHOU (錦州) with the Motor Bn, 46th Army, which consisted of 3,000 officers and men.
Feb 49: Moved to TIENCHIN (天津) MANCHURIA.
Sep 49: Returned to PEICHEN (北鎭) MANCHURIA.
Feb 50: PW, being the only Korean in the Motor Bn of the CCF 46th Army, was transferred to CHENCHOW (   ). Upon arriving, there were other Korean troops being staged in the area from all the units of the CCF.
Mar 50: With 3,000 Korean troops, was sent to KOREA via rail.
7 Apr 50: Arrived P'YONGYANG (平壤).
16 May 50: Moved to SINUIJU (新義州) and was assigned to the 13th Div, 731st Anti-Tank Bn (code no: 731 Unit) and at the same time was commissioned Jr Lt.
21 Jun 50: Unit was ordered to move out arid participate in the field maneuvers of the NKA.
24 Jun 50: PW's unit, fully equipped, moved by rail to a point near the 38th parallel.
24 Jun 50: CO of the 13th Div, Anti-tank Bn, announced the attack below the 38th parallel into S KOREA.
27 Jun 50: Crossed the 38th parallel With 430 EM and 20 Officers. Equipment consisted of 12 - 45mm M/1937 Antitank guns and 13 - CAZ-51 trucks.
3 Jul 50: Arrived in SEOUL (서울).
18 Jul 50: Left SEOUL (서울) and travelled north to CHUNJU (忠州).
Aug 50: Promoted to Lt.
Sep 50: Arrived SANGJU (尙州). Here the unit was under constant aerial attack by UN aircraft.
23 Sep 50: As of this date, 7 - 8 men were killed and 8 trucks and 3 anti-tank guns were destroyed by UN aircraft. PW realized that part of his unit was cut off, so with 13 other men of his unit, fled to CHECH’ON (堤川). Enroute to CHECH’ON, found a "Safe Conduct Pass" which had been dropped by a UN plane.
28 Sep 50: Surrendered to ROK troops when they seized CHECH’ON.

FORMER CHINESE COMMUNIST UNIT
During May 48 - Feb 50 PW served in the Motor Bn, 46th Army, CCF. (See attached sketch.)

MAJOR CAMPAIGNS
The only campaign PW participated in against the Nationalist Army was at CHINCHOU (錦州) in mid-Sep 48 for about 10 days. PW's unit was a rear echelon unit; therefore he did not engage in actual combat. The entire 46th Army participated in the fighting around this sector.

LOCATION OF UNIT AT TIME OF DEPARTURE FOR KOREA
Units of the 46th Army were located at PEICHEN (北鎭). PW had no knowledge as to the location of the 165th, 167th, and 168th Inf Divs which were part of the 46th Army.

PAY OF PERSONNEL
As a 1st class auto repairman (mechanic) and driver, PW received 48,000 YUAN per month as of Feb 50.

SOVIET EQUIPMENT
CCF Units were partially equipped with Soviet made small arms.

CAPTURED NATIONALIST TROOPS AND EQUIPMENT
During the campaign of CHIN CHOU (錦州), the 46th Army of the CCF had captured, according to hearsay, an estimated 30,000 Nationalist troops. These troops, according to hearsay, could either join the CCF or return to their homes. There were some former Nationalist troops serving in PW's unit and he learned from them that they, as skilled workers (auto mechanics and drivers), joined the CCF of their own volition because it was easier to make a living. The former Chinese Nationalist Forces in the CCF were satisfied with the treatment and life in the CCF. They were treated as equals.

PW stated that food supply was sufficient and troops were well fed at all times. There were no set portions for individuals. Although rice, flour, bread, noodles, etc were basic items in each meal, the troops had a variety of other goods.

ATTITUDE OF CIVILIAN POPULATION
The average or better - than - average groups of people do not like Communism, therefore, it is also believed that their attitude toward the CCF was unfavorable. The poorer class of peoples’ attitude toward the CCF trc»aps was friendly and sociable.
