PW states that about 1,700 troops of the 9th Div with Maj Gen PAK, Hyo Sam (朴孝三) were located on a mountain approx 1,000 meters high about 5 km SE of P’YONGYANG.
A dirt road that leads from KUMHWA to P’YONGYANG cuts through this mountain. While PW was here (between 6 Nov 50-13 Nov 50) he slept in fox holes and every day about 200 men patrolled the mountains. The 1,700 men ware separated into Bns (approx 160 men) and every night a squad from each Bn went out to a village located near the troops to get food. 50% of the 1,700 men were believed to have bean armed with rifles and/or SMQ with approx 65 rds each. No heavy weapons were observed. PW did not know whether they were in contact with other NK troops or whethor they were being supplied with arms.
The troops were usually fed twice a day but at times did not have any food at all. All of the 11700 men still had summer uniforms.
