3. MILITARY HISTORY:28 Aug 50 - Conscripted at WONJU (原州) South KOREA and attached to the 38th Brig, 2nd Regt, 2nd Bn, 2nd Co, Received 15 days of military training.
o/a 15 Sep 50 - The entire 38th Brig departed WONJU on foot.
o/a 30 Sep 50 - Arrived at ORO RI (五老里) The 38th Brig was redesignated the 38th Div. At ORO RI the entire 3rd Regt was issued dark blue naval jackets. In addition wall over ½ of the entire 38th Div was similarly dressed.
1 Oct 50 - The Div departed ORO RI by train and on foot. While enroute troops were fed very little rice and ate raw potatoes.
4 Oct 50 - Arrived at HAGARU RI (下降里). While at HAGARU RI troops received 2 hours of military training daily. (during the night) PW frequently observed CCF units (riding and leading a large number of horses) marching south through HAGARU RI, (unit designation and strength unk)
3 Nov 50 - Troops of the 3rd Regt were informed that the entire 38th Div would leave HAGARU RI and enter MANCHURIA via CHANG JIN (長津). Troops were told they would receive military training in MANCHURIA since training in North KOREA was impossible with the heavy UN aerial bombing,
3 Nov 50 - PW deserted and remained in mountains in the vicinity of HAGARU RI.
20 Nov 50 - PW and several others surrendered to UN troops at HAGARU RI.
4. ORGANIZATION:Organization and strength of the 38th Brig while at WONJU was unk. The 38th Div was composed of the 1st, 2n and, 3rd Inf Regts and an Arty Regt. Each of the Regts comprised 3 Bns (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and each Bn of 3 Inf Cos, an Arty Co, a commo Plat and a supply Plat, Organization of the Arty Regt was unknown.
The 38th Div strength was unk, but the personnel were mainly South Korean conscriptees. The 3rd Bn of the 3rd Regt had about 550 men, The 1st Plat of the 2nd Co, 3rd Bn, 3rd Regt had 14 South Korean conscriptees and 9 well trained North Korean RA soldiers.
Troops carried no weapons. However, officers were armed with pistols, No heavy equipment or weapons wore seen in the Div.
As a whole the 38th Div was vary poorly equipped and trained.
