FIELD REPORT (521 - MISD - 0255) 17 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative, but lacked detailed knowledge of his unit.
Education: 4½ yrs primary school
Age : 18
Physical condition: Ear and Lung Trouble
PW spoke freely and was willing to give information, Report obtained seemed to be fairly reliable.

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
16 Jul 50 - Inducted at CHUNDONG (興洞) (home address) and was. sent to SINHUNG (新興) for physical examination.
17 Jul 50 - Approximately 100 others left SINHUNG by train and arrived at HAMHUNG (咸興).
19 Jul 50 - Left HAMHUNG with approximately 1,000 others by train. En route the railroad was bombed and train was delayed.
o/a 24 Jul 50 - Arrived at CHORWON (鐵原), Issued uniform and assigned to the 513 Artillery Unit of 45th Div. Received basic training for 30 days, 513th Artillery Unit had 1400 men.
o/a 25 Aug 50 - Due to the continuous ·air raids, unit moved westward 15 km to a village, IMMOKRI (林黙里). PW received basic training.
o/a 15 Sep 50 - Unit left IMMOKRI for KANDONG-GUN (琷東郡) due to the approach of UN Forces. The unit marched an average of 40 km a night.
o/a 20 Sep 50 - Ar rived at a small village in KANDONG-GUN.
o/a 21 Sep 50 - Due to the severe air raids, the troops received orders to assemble at KANGGYE (江界). The troops were told to go there individually to prevent being spotted by planes, PW walked nights only and obtained food from the farmers.
o/a 25 Oct 50 - PW arrived at KANGGYE but since there was nobody from 513 Arty Unit there he deserted.
o/a 6 Nov 50 - PW was captured just before reaching his home village by US MP.

4. PERSONALITIES:
RHEE Pon Ha (李峰花) (리봉화), Korean (EX-CCF member-hearsay), Colonel, 35, 513 Unit Commander.

5. ORGANIZATION:
513 Unit was under the 45th Div. PW heard from his comrade that this unit consisted of signal, artillery, infantry, transport and supply units. The total number of troops was 1400. PW observed 1 jeep, which was for the unit CO and seven trucks which carried supplies. Guards were the only ones armed with Jap 6.5mm MEIJI 38 Infantry Rifles. (Total of 20 rifles in this unit) PW never was issued a rifle. An unknown number of 105mm guns were said to have been supplied to this unit but PW never saw them arrive.

6. FOREIGN ELEMENTS:
o/a 25 Oct 50 at KANGGYE PW saw CCF troops numbering an estimated 1,000 marching southward (or south-eastward) in two files. The designation of this unit was unknown, Only 20 or 30% of these troops were armed (Japanese 99 model).
o/a 4. Nov 50 PW saw approximately 30 CCF troops in the trenches approximately 4 km south of KWANDAE-RI (館大里) (관대리). PW heard from the villagers that there were approximately 3,000 CCF defending in the mountains south of KWANDAI-RI. The defense line was said to run SW to NE. PW stated that trenches were well camouflaged.

7. CODE NUMBER:
513 Arty Unit was called simply 513 Unit.

8. WEAPONS AND PERSONNEL:
PW believed he was in one of the Bns but was never told its number. PW estimates unit strength as 400. With the exception of 20 guards, none were armed. Of seven trucks only two arrived safely at KANDONG-GUN. The remaining five were said to have been bombed.
When departing CHORWON, PW estimated 400 troops were in his unit but on arrival at KANDONG-GUN only 300 were counted. The remaining 100 were said to have deserted or have been killed by air raids.

9. ARMOR:
At KANGGYE PW saw, o/a 25 Oct 50, three guns loaded on three trucks going north. PW heard from the inhabitants that these suns were 105mm and were being sent to MANPOJIN (滿浦鎭) where greater units were to be reorganized.

10. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was very scarce during PW is military service. PW received two to three rice cakes per day during his basic training. Food was obtained through local government committee (地方 自給 委員會).

11. MORALE:
PW believed that morale was very law due to the shortage of food, air raids, and continuous retreats. Troops were often puzzled by the total lack of arms.
At CHORWON o/a 15 Aug 50 PW observed one UN Propaganda Leaflet This leaflet influenced him later to desert the unit.

12. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
PW heard from inhabitants and men of other units (unit unidentified) at KANGGE o/a 25 Oct 50 that after assembling, the troops all moved up to MANPOJIN.
