March 1936 - Conscripted into the Chinese Nationalist Army (9th Co, 3rd Bn, 958th Regt, 16oth Div, 66th Army) at CANTON, CHINA.

Nov 48 - Captured by the Chinese Communists and assigned to 5th Army, 13th Div, Arty Regt, 2nd Co at SOMYOUNG (瀋陽), MANCHURIA. Given communist indoctrination.

Dec 48 - The 5th Army captured PEIPING (北京). The 5th Army redesignated the 42nd Army.

Mar 49 - Army arrived at HONAM (河南), Central CHINA.

Jul 49 - Army occupied FUPAEK (胡北), Central CHINA.

Dec 49 - The 42nd Army moved by train to Hl~ILUNG JYON SIN, TUNG PEK (黑龍江 省東正), MANCHURIA.

Jun 50 - The 42nd Army left HEILUNG JYON SIN for TUNGWHA (通化), MANCHURIA by train for purpose of protecting the Manchurian border.

14 Oct 50 - The 124th Div left TUNGWHA and arrived SINAHN (通化), MANCHURIA on the same date.

15 Oct 50 - The 124th Div left SINAHN.

16 Oct 50 - Arrived at KANGGYE (江界), KOREA.

22 Oct 50 - Arrived at HWANG CHO RYONG (黃草嶺).

1 Nov 50 - The 124th Div encountered UN forces.

3 Nov 50 - PW surrendered to US Marines at HWANG CHO RYONG.

The 42nd Army comprised the 124th, 125th and 126th Divs, a directly attached guard Bn, a postal unit (Bn strength) and a medical unit of approx 150 men, Approx 2/3 of the medical unit were Japanese.

The Commanding General was Maj Gen WU (吳) (see attached chart for Army chain of command). Each Div consisted of 1 Arty Bn and 3 Inf Regts. Regts under the 3 Divs were numbered from 370th through 378th.

The Arty Bn consisted of 3 Cos (1st, 2nd and 3rd). Each Co consisted of 4 Plat, a command Plat, and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Plats, The command Plat consisted of a LMG Sqd (12 men, 1 LMG, 8 rifles), an Obs Sqd (12 men, L range finder), a Sig Sqd (12 men, 2 field phones). The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Plats had 3 Sqds each, an Arty Sqd (12 men, 1/105 mm howitzer - Japanese model), a gun bearer Sqd (12 men) and an ammo bearer Sqd (12 men).

The Arty Bn was a Div Arty Unit ·and was in support of Div HQs during the encounter . on l -3 Nov 50. Its code number is 87 PUTUI.

Each Inf Regt consisted of 3 Bns. Each Bn had 3 rifle Cos and one HMG Co. One rifle Co consisted of 3 Flatis (4 Sqds). One Sqd had 12 men, armed with 8 Japanese and American rifles, and one LMG (American made 30 caliber).

The HMG Co had 6 HMGs (American made 30 caliber). Cos under the Regt were numbered consecutively from 1st to 9th (with the exception of HMG Cos).

Each Co also had 3 sections, Co HQs (15 men), Sig Section (2 field phones) and mess section (24 men).

The code number for the 42nd Army, 124th Div, Arty Bn, 2nd Co was “34 PU, YI DAI TUI, 87 PU TUI, ERH FUN TUI” (34部 第一大隊 87部隊 乙分隊).

These code numbers are given to the command positions of Bns and higher to protect the identity of personnel occupying such positions.

Over 100 Japanese doctors and nurses were observed at TUNGWHA (通化), MANCHURIA. O/a 10 Oct 50 these doctors and nurses were attached to the 42nd Army. PW observed over 100 Russian soldiers marching toward KANGGYE from the south. Observation made at a point 15km. S of KANGGYE (江界) o/a 18 Oct 50. These soldiers were armed with PPSH submachine guns and DP LMGs, marching in a single file. Approx 5 truck loads of Russian workers, mostly women, were also observed at the same. place and time.

PW observed one hundred and six T 34/85 tanks at 2400 hrs on 12 Oct 50 at TUNGWHA (通化), MANCHURIA. These tanks were loaded on two trains of flat cars. The first train load had 56 tanks and 10 Japanese made trucks. The second train load had 50 tanks, which followed the 1st train at a half hour’s interval. Both trains had two locomotives, and were headed south. They made a ten minutes stop at TUNGWHA.

Circumstance of observation - PW was on guard at a RR crossing when the 2 train loads of tanks passed by. They were identified as T 34 tanks by the two exhaust pipes with steel covering, PW heard from his company commander that the tanks were from the SOVIET UNION, and were intended for the North Korean Army.

Food and ammunition were said to come from SOMYOUNG (瀋陽), MANCHURIA. Other supply points for the 42nd Army are unknown.

The 124th Div was without supply for 2 days, due to the American bombing of the supply route on 1 and 2 Nov 50.

Former CNA troops would. desert the: Communist Army, if t hey had the knowledge that PWs receive fair treatment. The communistic elements of the CCF are not willing to surrender, but would rather die.

There is no friction between former CNA and CCF troops. The CNA troops arc against aiding the North Koreans, but the CCF troops are willing to intervene.

Most of the deserters were ex-CNA troops. The CCF troops were told not to take over North Korean homes for their quarters and all their food Was Obtained from MANCHUIRA.

Majority of the common workers in MANCHURIA are pro-communists and do not like the Chinese Nationalist Government. They regard RUSSIA as their “Big Brother”. The richer class of people are anticommunist and anti-RUSSIA.

All officers of the CCF have only red piping on the uniform cuffs and collars, and do not wear epaulets. The salute is not exchanged between officers and men. Ex-CNA troops have been assigned to the CCF since Nov 48 when approx 40,000 CNA troops surrendered to the CCF. Ex-CNA troops are given the same treatment when taken into the CCF as are the regular CCF troops, except generally they can not be promoted to responsible positions or have access to classified material, until they had served faithfully in the CCF for approx 3 yrs.

About one half of the 42nd Army are former CNA troops. This percentage has been constant. One third of the 42nd Army are Manchurian-born troops, the remaining two thirds are from south western CHINA.
