ASSESSMENT:

CHRONOLOGY:
Feb 42 PW joined the KUOMINTANG Army in HONAN-SHENG CHANGSHA (湖南省 長沙) as a Pvt.
Oct 48 Captured by the CCF in HEISHAN-HSIEN. (黑山縣)
Oct 48 Conscripted in the CCF in MUKDEN, MANCHURIA. Engaged in field training for 9 months in HARBIN (哈爾濱). Assigned to the 124th Div, 371st Regt, 2nd Bn, 4th Co, 60 mm Mortar Plat, 3rd Sqd as an ammunition bearer in mortar plat.
13 Aug 50 371st Regt, 124 Div, approximately 2400 men, departed HARBIN.
20 Aug 50 Arrived TUNGHUA, and engaged in field training, 1 1/2 months. Training consisted of trench digging, mountain climbing.
14 Oct 50 371st Regt, 124th Div departed TUNGHUA.
16 Oct 50 Arrived CHIAN (輯安) in t he morning, crossed the YALU (鴨綠江) River bridge that night and went into MANPOJIN (滿浦鎭) to regroup.
17 Oct 50 Departed MANPOJIN (滿浦鎭). Marched.
25 Oct 50 Arrived KANGGYE (江界).
27 Oct 50 Arrived CHANGJIN (長津). Rested 1 day.
29 Oct 50 371st Regt; 124 Div departed CHANGJIN, heading south toward CHANGJINHO (長津湖).
1 Nov 50 Arrived HWANGCHO LYONG (黃草嶺) via CHOSHIN RESERVOIR. Engaged in battle with ROK Forces' in mountain area for 14 hours.
2 Nov 50 Captured by ROK Troops with 4 others. Enroute did not observe any NK troop concentrations. Only saw wounded NK in KANGGYE. There were no Korean guides to lead them to the battle areas. Only maps were used. At MANPOJIN, 371st Regt officers were briefed and told to follow the route given on the map to the battle area.

Last known composition of unit - Many killed- and wounded.
Unit was disorganized - Many deserted because of cold and hunger.

EQUIPMENT:
6 x 82 mm and 9 x 60 mm Regt'l Mortars, 9 x 60 mm Mortars in Mortar Plat, 3 x 60 mm Mortars. in each Mortar Sqd, 6 x 30 cal US LMGs in Plat, 6 pack horses in Mortar Co.
3 hand grenades per rifleman, 400 x 45 cal US grease guns (captured from KUOMINTANG Army), 500 x 38 cal (?) Jap rifles, 300 x 60 mm Mortar Shells, 40 x 82 mm Mortar Shells.
Ammo supply came from MUKDEN and HARBIN. Men were issued winter clothing.

UNIT HISTORY
PW stated that his units' enlisted men and officers (company commanders and plat leaders) are former KUOMINTANG Troops. There are no CCF EH in PS' s unit. O~ly officers from Bn Commanders up are CCF personnel.

COMMUNICATIONS
During the march to HWANGCHO LYONG, the main highway was observed to be in good shape. Telephone lines and electric lines were knocked down and considered useless.

MORALE IN PW's UNIT
Morale was very low. The men did not want to come to KOREA to engage in battle. The weather was very cold. Food supply was bad (2 or 3 days without any food). No provisions were made to issue rations. Unit traveled by night only, because of the danger from aircraft.
