Early Aug 50 - Departed HAMHUNG by train with many other new soldiers and arrived at SEOUL about 2 days later, At SEOUL PW was assigned to the 103rd Regt, 26th Bn.
Early Sep 50 - The Bn departed SEOUL on foot. PW heard from his Plat leader that the entire 103rd Regt was moving out of SEOUL. PW did not know whether the other Bn of the Regt departed SEOUL before or after the 26th had left or whether the 26th Bn was joined by other units.
Early Oct 50 - The Bn arrived at YANGDOK (陽德) after marching for about 20 days. Here it was deployed in the mountains to form a defense line. Two or three days later it was attacked by UN forces and forced to retreat. The Bn suffered many casualties and the retreat was disorderly. Many men left their weapons behind. Before retreating from YANGDOK the men were told to retreat to the Bn assembling point at KANGGYE (江界). PW started retreating with his Plat.
O/a 20 Oct 50 - PW deserted Plat at a place located approx 2 days walk west of the FUSEN Reservoir.
12 Nov 50 - Captured with 3 other deserters at ANSU MYON.

KIM, Chol Su (金哲洙) (김철수), Sr Lt, about 24, 3rd Co CO. Heard to have been wounded in the YANGDOK engagement.
HO, Yun Hyon (許潤憲) (허윤헌), Jr Lt, about 22, 1st Plat Ldr. Retreated to KANGGYE.

5. FOREIGN ELEMENTS:
O/a 23 Oct 50 while passing through HAGARU RI and the CHOSIN Reservoir area, PW saw many CCF and NKA troops. He could not estimate the total number. Most of these troops were staying in the civilian homes.

6. ORGANIZATION:
PW heard that the 103rd Regt, which was a security unit, contained 4 Bns. However, he did not know the designations of the other Bns beside the 26th Bn. Strength of the 103rd Regt was unknown.
The 26th Bn comprised the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Inf Cos and a HMG Co. In addition a Medical Plat, a Transportation Plat, a Sig Plat, a Recon Plat and a Guard Plat were attached directly to the 26th Bn.
In each Co there were approx 140 officers and men but the HMG Co and Guard Plat had a comparatively small number of personnel. PW did not know the strength of the entire 26th Bn.
The Bn suffered many casualties at the YANGDOK engagement and PW believed that many deserted while they were retreating north to KANGGYE, since more than half of the men in the Bn wanted to do so.
PW observed only small arms in the Bn and only 2 HMGs were seen.

7. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
While retreating from YANGDOK toward KANGGYE in mid Oct 50 PW observed many stragglers from various units of the NKA retreating north. PW did not know what units those stragglers were from. Many of them were wounded and did not have any weapons. PW did not know their destination, but surmised that they were going toward towns near the YALU River such as KANGGYE and MANPOJIN.
While roaming around the FUSEN Reservoir area o/a 8 Nov 50 PW observed approx 200 to 300 NKA troops (unit unk) retreating north through the area between CHANGDOK (長德) and YAKSU RI (藥水里).
Some of those soldiers said they had been defeated at CHANGDOK and were heading toward YAKSU RI.
The medical corpsmen in the 26th Bn were not armed. Some wore red cross bands and some did not.
