2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability: Fair

Education: Middle School (1 yr)

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
28 Jul 50 - Inducted at HAMHUNG (咸興) and sent by train to HYESANJIN (惠山鎭) with 26 other inductees,
31 Jul 50 - Reached HYESANJIN and was assigned to 3rd Medical Co (57 men) of the 963rd (Medical?) Unit and received medical training for about 3 mos. (Unit number observed served on company Commander’s outgoing mail.) No medical treatment was administered by this unit.
7 Nov 50 - PW and a Plat of medics (10 men) departed on foot for KAPSAN (甲山) and reached the KAPSAN Military Police Section on 9 Nov 50. PW and this Plat were assigned to the 588th Inf Unit located about 15 miles SW of KAPSAN.
14 Nov 50 - The intensity of attack of the UN forces gradually increased and on 16 Nov 50 PW, seeing that the NK forces were fighting a losing battle, deserted. While deserting the unit, PW was shot from behind through the chin. PW headed south to contact the UN troops because he had previously read a safe conduct leaflet.

4. WEAPONS AND PERSONNEL:
PW and 10 medics carried 7.62 MOSSIN-NAGANT M 1924/27 carbine and never wore red cross bands. Whether Red Cross brassards are worn by other medical person could not be determined.
PW has no idea of the strength of the 588th Unit except that 40 infantrymen of this unit wore dug in on a hill in his area. He could give no information on the 401st Unit which was deployed on the right flank of the 588th during the engagement.

5. WOUNDED:
During the period the medical unit was in operation (9-14 Nov 50) about 60 wounded were given medical assistance. The members of the Plat worked individually and an exact total could not be determined.
Medical supplies included sulphamine, mercurochrome, tincture of iodine, and sterile bandages. There was doctor with the Plat. There was a doctor with the 588th Unit, but he did not supervise the work of the platoon.
The seriously wounded were evacuated by truck toward HYESANJIN, others had to walk.

6. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
O/a 26 Oct 50 PW went to the HYESANJIN (惠山鎭) 85th Hospital with his commanding officer to get a patient to be used as a subject for their first aid lesson.
On their way to and from the hospital PW saw about 400 soldiers in every day clothing receiving close order drill instruction from a uniformed soldier.
Subject heard that soldiers were treated at the hospital but they were billeted in individual homes. The families billeting theses soldiers received extra food rations.
On 4 Nov 50 there were general rumors in HYESANJIN that the CCF was going join the NKA but source has never seen any Chinese during his service.
On 8 Nov 50 while en route from HYESANJIN to KAPSAN PW saw about 5 soldiers, armed with rifles and walking individually, in the general direction of HYESANJIN.
PW stated that no elements of the NKA passed through HYESANJIN en route to MANCHURIA while he was there and that on 8 Nov 50 when he departed for KAPSAN there were NKA units stationed in the HYESANJIN area.
