PW not very intelligent. Information limited due to his very limited military experience. States that majority of South Koreans sent to the front lines by the NKPA will desert at the first opportunity.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
| 1 Sep 50: | PW conscripted. Assigned to a rear echelon ammunition transportation battalion composed of an estimated 600 S. Koreans. PW engaged in moving of artillery shells, mortar shells, small arms ammo and hand grenades at an ammo dump located at a point on the ANDONG (1160-1520)-UISONG (1160-1490) highway, approx 8 km N of UISONG (義城). Ammunition was dispersed in an area 2 to 8 m of either side of the highway and extending for about 4 km (afore-mentioned distance from reference point, UISONG, is up to the southern end of the ammo dump area). Ammo was camouflaged with leaves. Ammo transported, nightly, by trucks up to this dump from unknown points north of ANDONG. |
| S. Koreans were utilized in the carrying of ammo front this dump to a forward ammo dump located on the UISONG-UIHUNG (義興) highway, approx 8 km S of UISONG. Forward ammo dump had same characteristic as rear dump, only smaller. Ammo dump had same characteristic as rear dump, only smaller. Ammo was immediately relayed to the front lines from this forward dump (coinion). | |
| 8 Sep 50: | PW and 100 other S. Koreans ordered to the front. Followed mountain trails from UISONG and arrived just north of YONGCH’ONG. 30 to 30 S. Koreans, including PW, assigned to 1st Co, 1st Bn, 1st Regt, 8th Div (learned name of unit from Co CO.) All S. Korean replacements in 1st Co received Russian rifles with 100 rounds of ammo. Rifles were in good condition. |
091500 Sep:PW deserted to ROK forces while 1st Co as in the attack.
