Cooperative but seems unobservant.
Farmer at PYONGAN PUKTO prior to induction, 23 Jul 50.
Captured by ROK after refusing to advance when ordered by superiors.

T/O & E OF PW’s UNIT:
574th Unit composed of three rifle Battalions, a mortar platoon, HMG Platoon, 76 mm Howitzer Unit (2 truck-drawn 76 mm Howitzer), and a medical Platoon.
1st Battalion composed of three rifle companies and a Signal Squad.
1st Company composed of three rifle Platoons, a Signal squad, and a medical squad.
Each rifle platoon composed of three squads, a total of 40 men; arms included: 3 x SMGs and an unknown number of rifles (each rifle 30 to 50 rounds). Every man carried one to two hand grenade.

DISPOSITION OF ABOVE UNITS:
HQ, 1st Battalion, 574 Unit was located in a village 9 Km north of YONGCHON on 8 Sep 50.

PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted 23 Jul 50 at SINUIJU. Trained with 2,000 others at SINUIJU airfield until 3 Aug 50. Informant and 2,000 others departed SINUIJU on 3 Aug 50 and traveled by train through PYONGYANG and SEOUL to WONJU. Detrained at WONJU on or about 13 Aug 50.
The unit traveled to a mountain 2 Km South of WONJU, where, on or about 14 Aug 50, they were designated as the 574 unit. 574 unit departed on 14 Aug 50 and marched through CHECHON, TANYANG, YONGJU, ANDONG, CHONGSONG, to a point 8 Km east of YONGCHON.
Upon being ordered to attack, the informant and 10 others figured death and were subsequently captured by an unknown ROK Force 8 km east of YONGCHON.

FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was acquired front People’s Committee (人民委員會) which was set up in each village.
Initial issue of ammo of 50 rounds was supplied at KAESONG Railroad Station on 10 Aug 50. Each rifleman received 30 rounds ammo at CHONGSONG on or about 31 Aug 50.
Ammo was transported to CHONGSONG on horse carts. Ammo was placed in ditch along the main road passing through CHONGSONG, this observed 31 Aug 50. Approximately two truck loads of rifle ammo were believed to have been placed here. Camouflaged by placing grass on top of the boxes.

REPLACEMENTS:
574 Unit received no replacements as of 8 Sep 50,
Wounded were sent to ANDONG, where a large hospital is located.

Morale of enlisted men was very low because of air strikes. Morale of officers was fairly high.

SOUTH KOREAN SENTIMENTS:
Very little contact with South Korean Civilians in that the unit traveled only at night.
Told by superior that they would be shot if they were caught conversing with South Korean civilians. Observed a NK soldier shot and killed because he was talking to South Korean civilian, o/a-4 Sep 50. Incident occured on unknown mountain to which villagers had fled to avoid strikes.
