FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0780) 9 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. INTERROGATOR’S REMARKS:
PW was cooperative, however, due to no education, possessed low intelligence, therefore, PW is unreliable.
PW was a farmer, ever since he could remember at his father’s farm til 23 Aug 50, KUCHOL NI.
PW was captured (6 Sep 50); while his plt (50 troops) was on a mission (mission unknown), to a Mt, 8 km NW of YONGCHON. Upon reaching the Mt area (6 Aug 50, 2400 hrs) they were attacked by unknown ROK troops. Due to the severe firing of machine guns and rifles, the Plt scattered all over the Mt areas. PW and another soldier ran away to a house located at the foot of the Mt. Upon entering the house PW and the other soldier were captured by unknown ROK troops who were occupying the house.

3. TO & E OF PW'S UNIT:
3rd Plt: 50 men
Squad : 10 - 13 men
Rifleman was armed with M1891/30 rifles, 5 rounds, 1 grenade.
Sqd ldrs: Sub-machine guns, two (2) 70 round drums. No grenades.
Officer : No weapon.

4. DISPOSITION OF UNIT:
Unknown.

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
PW was inducted 24 Aug 50, 2 km North of UISONG (in a tunnel).
PW received no military training there; after spending three (3) days at this point. On 27 Aug 50 PW and 1,000 replacements were assigned to 8th Div. However the Div was not stationed there except for few cadres.
On 3 Sep 50, the 1,000 men departed from the tunnel (2 km N of UISONG area) - marched - arrived UISONG - 4 Sep 50 (0200 hrs), without spending any time they departed UISONG on the same day (4 Sep 50).
After marching 10 km South of UISONG the 1,000 troops were separated by plts (50 men), on 6 Sep 50 about 1500 hours. Disposition of these platoons were unknown. However, PW’s 3rd Plt marched to a Mt 8 km NW of YON CHON arriving on 6 Sep 50 (2400 hrs).

6. ARTILLERY:
PW observed two (2) 122mm guns at UISONG on 3 Sep 50, along the road. The number of troops stationed there unknown, however, observed about 17 men around the gun area.

7. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
PW received average of one (1) meal per day since 3 Sep 50 to 6 Sep 50.
Food supplies were looted from villages.
Ammunition last received - 8 km South of UISONG on 4 Sep 50. 5 rounds per man and also received a rifle (2nd-hand and was in bad condition).
PW believes that ammunition supplies were brought by trucks by main highway at nights from unknown point, because observed trucks loaded with ammo boxes almost every night.

8. REPLACEMENT:
According to PW, wounded troops were sent to ANDONG Hospital and after recovering from their wounds, they are sent back to their original units.
PW states that if any unit or person is lost from the parent unit, they were to keep on marching forward and no action is taken. (Other information lacking.)

9. ENEMY INTENTION:
PW was told by his plt leader that they should fight to the last man and never to give up. (Other details lacking.)

10. MORALE:
Due to limited service PW does not know about the troops morale. However, believes the morale was low because they were hungry and food was very scarce.
