Mortar Co had no mortars left when PW joined it on 31 Aug 50. Each man was armed with an M1899/30 rifle, 45 rounds of ammunition. No other info.

PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted on 30 Jul 50 at IWON. Departed from IWON on 30 Jul 50 by railroad with about 30 other conscripts from IWON, and arrived at SEOUL on 3 Aug 50 with a total of about 2,000 conscripts who had boarded the train at numerous towns and villages between IWON and SEOUL. Issued uniform at SEOUL on 4 Aug 50. Departed from SEOUL on 4 Aug 50 with approx 600 North Korean conscripts; crossed HAN River by ferry, then marched and arrived, via PYONGTAEK, MUNGYONG, and HAMCHANG, at SANGJU o/a 20 Aug 50.
Departed fran SANGJU o/a 20 Aug 50, marched, and arrived at KUSAN DONG o/a 27 Aug 50.
Departed from KUSAN DONG o/a 27 Aug 50, marched, and arrived at a small unidentified village approx 16 km North of YONGCHON on 31 Aug 50. There, about 40 of the 600 conscripts who had left SEOUL with PW, joined 15th Div (approx 200 conscripts had not completed the trip because of desertions and illness).
Departed from unidentified village approx 16 km north of YONGCHON on 31 Aug 50, with 3rd Bn, 45th Regt, 15th Div, marched and arrived at a point about 10 km north of YONGCHON on 5 Sep 50 where the 3rd Plat, Mortar Co, of the 3rd Bn was ordered to follow about 500 meters behind the rest of the 3rd Bn to pick up stragglers and to protect the rear. By 7 Sep 50, the 13 men in the 3rd Plat, Mortar Co, had picked up 10 stragglers but had lost contact with the 3rd Bn. At 1400 hrs, 7 Sep 50, the 3rd Plat's 10 men and 13 stragglers were attacked by ROK soldiers approx 8 km north of YONGCHON. At 1700 hrs, 7 Sep 50, PW and 3 other EM from his platoon surrendered to ROK soldiers because all of the stragglers and other men in his platoon had bean killed by ROK small arms fire and grenades.

Observed three (3) truck-drawn light artillery pieces approx 16 km North of YONGCHON on the YONGCHON-KUSAN DONG road on 31 Aug 50.

FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Observed approx 15 x 2½ ton trucks in KUSAN DONG o/a 27 Aug 50. Trucks were carrying small arms ammunition and rice.
Observed three (3) ox-carts carrying rice approx 16 km North of YONGCHON on the YONGCHON-KUSAN DONG road on 31 Aug 50.
Received average 2 rice balls or 2 barley balls daily.

REPLACEMENTS:
Personnel separated from their units are Used as replacements by the first NKPA unit that they contact.

ENEMY INTENTIONS:
Objective of 1st Bn, 45th Begt, 15th Div was YONGCHON (5 Sep 50)
Received no gas equipment or training.
Heard nothing about CCF or USSR sending troops to aid NKPA.

MORALE:
Morale was low because of shortage of equipment and food, and because of inadequate training.

South Korean civilians resent confiscation of their food in areas “liberated" by NKPA. They complain as individuals but not as a group.

MISCELLANEOUS:
Read safe conduct leaflets dropped by UN aircraft over SANJU o/a 20 Aug 50. PW put one leaflet in his pocket, but later threw it away after he joined 15th Div because his officers threatened to punish anyone possessing such “propaganda”.
