FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0826) 12 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative; despite no schooling and poor memory PW seems fairly reliable.

3. T/O & E OF PW’S UNIT:
Self-propelled arty Co: 5 SU 76 arty pieces (from man crew each, with one officer).
Plts: Two or three SU 76 arty pieces (four man crew each with one officer).

4. PERSONALITIES:
3rd self-propelled arty Co CO: CHO, Hi Cho (趙喜祚) rank: Sr Lt. Age approx 25 yrs,

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted 10 Dec 48 at RANAM (羅南) with the 5th Div, 10th Regt, 2nd Bn 5th Co, 1st Plt, 3rd Sqd.
PW received approx ten months of basic infantry training which included marksmanship, close order drill, and calisthenics at RANAM.
After training PW and about two Bns of the 5th Div were transferred to the PYONGYANG (平壤), Self-Propelled Arty Training unit in Oct 49.
There were approx 600 students at the school.
PW received training until 5 Jun 50. Training included the firing of guns, driving, and fire direction,
Instructions were all Korean officers who had previous military experience.
On 5 Jun 50, the students were all transferred to various units. PW and approx 20 men were assigned to the 15th Div, self-propelled arty bn. The 15th Div at the time was stationed at HAEYONG (海營).
On 20 Jun 50, the entire 15th Div departed HAEYONG by rail and arrived at CHORWON on 23 Jun 50.
Departed CHORWON 23 Jun 50 - marched - arrived HONGCHON - 26 Jun 50.
Departed HONGCHON - 26 Jun 50 - marched - arrived YOJU - 4 Jul 50.
Departed YOJU - 8 Jul 50 - marched - arrived KESAN - (?) Jul 50.
Departed KESAN - (?) Jul 50 - marched - arrived - UISONG - 24 Aug 50.
Departed UISONG - 24 Aug 50 - marched - arrived KUSAN-DONG - 1 Sep 50.
Departed. KUSAN-DONG - 3 Sep 50 - marched - arrived - YONGCHON - 7 Sep 50.
On 28 Aug 50, the self-propelled arty Bn left UISONG, with five SU 76 pieces and 50 men.
After marching two days, PW’s self-propelled arty broke down and PW was forced to separate from his unit. PW and four other men remained and tried to repair the damage, but before they got started, they were attacked by US Aircraft and the pieces were destroyed. However, no troops were killed or injured,
The following day (31 Aug 50) PW and the four troops were joined by the rear unit of the self-propelled arty Bn and they continued their march,
About 2 km N of YONGCHON the rear unit and the forward unit of the self-propelled arty Bn met on 5 Sep 50,
After spending three days at this point, the. self-propelled Bn continued their march to YONGCHON; as soon as the unit entered the city, they were shelled by ROK artillery.
The unit continued their march nevertheless, through heavy shelling. During the shelling three self-propelled arty pieces were destroyed and an unknown number of troops were killed.
After marching 8 km E of YONGCHON the unit stopped marching and rested there, spending two days at this point. On 9 Sep 50 about 0600 hours the unit was surrounded by ROK troops and was attacked. During the attack, PW hid himself under a bridge and was later captured by ROK troops at 0800 hours.

6. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
PW received average of two meals per day, one rice ball with few vegetables (soya beans) constituted one meal.
Food was looted from farms which had been evacuated.
Ammo last received at 8 km N of YONGCHON on 6 Sep 50; 30 to 60 76mm shells per self-propelled weapon.
Ammo supplies were brought by truck, which followed the unit.

7. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
15th Div's objective was YONGCHON via main highway.

8. MORALE:
Troops’ morale was low, because many men were being killed and the food allotment was insufficient.

9. CAPTURED EQUIPMENT:
PW observed two captured carbines in his unit, which were utilized against U.S.
