ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 2799　4 January 1951

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS FWD #1 - 0282)　31 December 1950

PW was cooperative, however, due to short period of service, information was limited. Info may be considered reliable.

4 Jul 50: Conscripted at CHINNAMP’O (鎭南浦) and assigned to the 572nd Regt, 2nd Bn, 3rd Co.

4 Aug 50: 572nd Regt arrived at P’YONGYANG (平壤) and was engaged in training for one week.

10 Aug 50: Regt departed P’YONGYANG by train, traveled during the night and took cover in the tunnels during the day.

13 Aug 50: Train was bombed by UN aircraft near SEOUL (서울) while trying to take cover in a tunnel. The entire train was completely demolished. Food supplies, and ammo destroyed. The number lost by the 572nd Regt was unk after the attack from UN aircraft. The 572nd Regt hid during the day and marched during the night as they went south, and rested approx one week at an unk village. Food supplies and ammo were provided to the Regt from advance NK troops who were occupying the villages and towns along the way.

2 Sep 50: 572nd Regt arrived at MOKP’O (木浦), the elements of the Regt were spread out along the outskirts of MOKP’O City. The 3rdCo which PW was assigned, rested for one week. After week’s rest the company was ordered to retreat to CHUNCH’ON (春川), after one day of retreat. PW and six other men deserted their company because they heard that UN forces were advancing toward them. PW believed that UN forces have already occupied NK, therefore it was safe to go back to his home in SINUIJU and work as a carpenter. PW and six men began to travel through mountains at night and resting during the day. At night, they went to little villages in the mountain, and stole beans, rice, and clothing. They cooked food during the day.

Nov 50: PW and six men picked up UN propaganda leaflets in the mountain, leaflets stated that if they gave up they will be given good treatment, food, and clothing. A picture of a PW holding rice balls in his hand was attached to the leaflets. PW and men decided to give up the next day, however, they met approx 20 guerrillas in the mountains near HANGAN (한강). PW showed the leaflet to the guerrillas and he was told not to believe it, if they do surrender to the UN forces, they will be killed. Next day, PW and the men found another leaflet which they took to one of the little villages in the mountains, here they asked their opinion regarding the UN forces’ treatment of PsW, the villagers replied favorably on the UN treatment, therefore, on 13 Dec 50, PW and seven men voluntarily surrendered to security police at HANCHON-NI and in turn the security police turned them over to the UN forces.

Did you surrender? If so, why? Answer: Yes, I was forced into the NK Army, and I hate communism, so I surrendered.

Did you see any UN leaflets or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts?

Answer: Yes, I saw the leaflets.

What did the leaflets look like or what did the loudspeaker broadcast?

Answer: “Bring this leaflet and surrender, we will give you good treatment, abundant food, and clothing, then will send you home. It is not necessary to bring the leaflet, and if you wish, you may bring, or leave your weapon behind.” One side of the leaflet was in blue color with a UN insignia on it, on the other side, the before mentioned statement with a picture of a PW holding rice ball in his hand was attached.

What was the effect on you? Answer: I wanted to surrender, however, due to many rumors about being killed by UN forces, if we surrendered, I was confused, therefore, I had to confirm the statement on leaflet by asking some people at villages before I surrendered.

Did you hear any talk about leaflets or broadcasts? If so, what was said and what happened? Answer” I did not hear any talk about leaflets or broadcasts before I observed the leaflets myself, however, heard rumors that any NK soldier will be killed if caught by UN forces.
