PW was uncooperative. Information considered unreliable.
Chronology:
Aug 48: Volunteered for the Nationalist Army at HSI-HSIEN, HONAN SHENG (泗川湖南省) and took training for two months at a training center.
Nov 48: CCF unit captured HSI-HSIEN and PW escaped to his birth place, HONAN SHENG, WU LUNG TSI. PW joined the security police at his village.
Feb 49: PW went to HANKOW (漢口) and started a business as a peddler.
Apr 49: PW was conscripted into the 39th Army, 116th Div, 348th Regt, 1st Bn, 2nd Co at HU HSIEN.
Aug 50: Entire 39th Army moved to HAICHENG (海城) LIAOYANG (遼陽) Province; here, the 116th Div was engaged in training.
22 Oct 50: 1st Bn of the 116th Div arrived at ANTUNG (安東). Evening of 22 Oct 50, 1st Bn crossed the YALU River. Meanwhile PW heard that entire 39th Army was coming down to ANTUNG from HAICHENG.
Oct 50: 1st Bn of 116th Div arrived at UNSAN (雲山) and waited 24 hours for reinforcements from 39th Army. Strength of reinforcements unknown. After three days of combat with UN Force UNSAN was taken. After the battle, entire 39th Army rested at UNSAN for approx one week.
19 Dec 50: Arrived TOKCHON (德川), by passing P’YONGYANG (平壤), and SINNANG. The 1st Bn of the 116th Div arrived at KORANGPO-RI after 3 days. Two platoons of the 2nd Co of the 1st Bn were ordered to a mountain near the city.
24 Dec 50: While hiding in the mountain, PW and seven other men were captured.
PW did not know the reason why they were ordered up the mountain.
While stationed at KORANGPO-RI, PW heard the 39th Army was in the vicinity of KORANGPO-RI (고랑포리).
Original Organization and Strength:
39th Army - 115th Div, 116th Div and 117th Div.
116th Div - 346th Regt, 347th Regt, and 348th Regt. (hearsay - Arty Bn).
348th Regt - 3 Bns
1st Bn - 3 Rifle Cos and 1 Heavy Mortar Co.
Strength:
348th Regt, original strength, 2,400 to 2,500 men as of Oct 50.
Equipment:
1st Bn - 6 LMGs to each Rifle Co; 2 x 120mm Mortars to each Rifle Co; 1 Bazooka to each Rifle Co.
Heavy Mortar Co - 3 HMGs, 2 x 82mm Mortar.
Communications:
Communication was conducted by telephone between companies, Bns, and Div.
Intentions:
PW heard the 39th Army was to take SEOUL.
Knowledge of Other Units:
PW heard the 40th Army was located near the 38th parallel, on the western part of KORANGPO-RI, and the 38th Army located on the eastern area of KORANGPO-RI.
Morale:
Morale of the men was low due to lack of food and clothing.
PW stated he was assigned as a cultural man to his unit. His duties were to teach men Chinese characters, and songs.
Psychological Warfare:
Did you surrender? If so, Why? Answer: No.
Did you see any UN leaflets or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts? Answer: Yes.
What did the leaflets look like or what did the loudspeaker say?
Answer: PW observed white leaflets dropped by planes at TOKCHON (德川) about Dec 50, however, PW received orders from his officers in command not to go out and pick up the leaflets because the UN planes will fire on them while they are exposed. PW also heard broadcasts from UN aircraft at TOKCHON. The broadcast stated that CCF did not have any reason for coming into KOREA. The men (CCF) are going under great hardships through the cold weather and accomplishing nothing. Other statements were broadcast over the loudspeaker; however, due to the noise of the plane, PW was unable to hear.
What was the effect on you? PW believed in the broadcast; however, was unable to desert his unit due to the alert officers over him.
