FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISD - 0205)　16 December 1950

PW was very cooperative. However, due to his low rank and limited service, information, although considered reliable, was limited.

a. PW joined the NKA II Corps, 9th Div, 1st Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co, 1st Plat, at PYONGGANG 15 Nov 50. O/a 16 Nov the 1st Co (170 men) left PYONGGANG to join the1st Bn at CHORWON. It then departed CHORWON with the 1st Bn (600 men) for YONCHON and arrived 13 Dec, via KUMHWA (17 Nov), HWACHON (18 Nov) and WONTONG Ni. PW was captured at YONCHON 14 Dec.

b. Prior to PW’s capture 14 Dec, the 1st Bn CP was situated on an unidentified hill located approx 4 kms S of YONCHON. Its units were deployed as follows (Exact location unk):

1. One Co of the Bn was deployed approximately 2 kms NW of YONCHON. Troops, numbering 150 men, were armed with approx 20 SMGs (100 rds ea), approx 130 rifles (80-100 rds ea) and 1 bazooka (without ammo).

2. Another Co (approx 150 men) was deployed on an unknown hill (300 meters high) approx 4 kms S of YONCHON. Troops were armed with approx 4 SMGs (100-150 rds ea), approx 96 rifles (80 rds ea) and approx 102 Hand Grenades.

3. A third unit of approx 50 men was deployed on an unknown hill approx 4 kms E of YONCHON. Troops were armed with 10 SMGs (100-150 rds ea) 40 rifles.

4. A fourth unit of approx 300 men, not a part of the 1st Bn, and constituting a unit called “KIDO RENTAI” (機動連隊) by the NKA, was situated 10 kms N of YONCHON. Troops were armed with 50 SMGs (100 rds ea) and 150 rifles.

c. The mission of the 1st Bn was to occupy the city of YONCHON. It then intended to press its attack towards the 38 parallel. Route of attack was unknown.

d. PW stated that the defensive line of the 1st Bn was in an area approx 4 kms S of YONCHON.

e. The II Corps CP was heard to be located in an area approximately 10 kms N of PYONGGANG, o/a 10 Nov 50.
