FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISD - 0204) 16 December 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: PAK Chun Hong (朴春弘)
AGE: 18
RANK: Pvt

UNIT: 8th Ind Inf Regt, 3rd Bn, 3rd Co, 1st Plat, 2nd Sqd
DATE, PLACE OF CAPTURE: CHUNG Myon (CT2724), 121900 Dec.
OCCUPATION: Laborer
EDUCATION: Middle School (2 yrs)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was fairly cooperative during interrogation and gave all information within his knowledge. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. T/O & E, DISPOSITION:
a. At time of PW’s capture, the 8th Ind Inf Regt strength was approximately 1000 men. The Regt consisted of 3 Bns, 3 Cos and a Hv Wpn Co. Each Co was composed of 40 men, armed with SMGs and rifles.
b. Regtl CP was located at MAJON NI (CT3330). CP occupied 5 houses at the foot of an unknown hill (about 40m high) and was located on the east side of the main road in MAJON NI. The 3rd Bn CP was located at CHILMOK TONG (CT275264). PW’s 3rd Co CP was located at CHOKKO RI (CT270255) vic CHUNG MYON (CT2724), approx 2 kms N from the highway and about 2 kms S of the 3rd Bn CP.
The main elements of the 8th Regt, composed of the 1st and 2nd Bns, separated from the Regt on 28 Nov 50 and headed for SIBYON NI (BT9941). Present location unknown.
3rd Bn and Regtl Hqs personnel were to head for CHORWON (CT4335) but were notified from unknown sources that enemy forces were in CHORWON, so they changed their course and arrived at MAJON NI 5 Dec where the Regtl CP was set up. On the same day, PW’s 3rd Bn was ordered to head for CHILMOK TONG and arrived on the same day where the Bn CP was set up. On that same day again, PW’s 3rd Co was ordered to head for CHUNG MYON and arrived during the night (time unk) for the purpose of road blocking any retreating enemy troops from SIBYON NI Area who were heading for YONCHON. Deployment of other Cos under the 3rd Bn was unknown. The 3rd Co stayed in the area until 12 Dec, observing the road when he gave himself up to the passing ROK 7th Inf Regt.
c. PW heard from a superior officer that the II Corps Zone of Guerrilla Operations included the mountainous area E of SIBYON NI and ICHON to the E coast, with CHORWON as the base of operations. It was also their objective to extend their operations S along the mountain ranges on the E coast. PW stated that the II Corps was composed of the remnants of the 4th, 6th, 9th, 15th NK Divs and the 8th Ind Inf Regt. PW heard that the 4th Div was the most well trained & organized since it contained the 18th Inf Regt whose troops had formerly served with the CCF in MANCHURIA. The 4th Div was commanded by Gen (Rank unk) PAK Chan Bong ( ) who was heard to be a close friend of KIM Il Sung. Further details unknown.
d. Each Inf Co had SMGs (PPsh M1940), captured US carbines and M-1 rifles, M99 Jap and Russ M1891 rifles. Each Co was equipped with 1 LMG (1 50 rds ea) and 15 Hand Grenades. The Hv Wpn Co had 2-60mm Mort, only one of which was operational, and 4 rds of ammo. Each Rifleman had about 30 rds of s/a ammo.

e. Personalities:
II Corps commander: CH’OE Hyon (崔献), Rank & Age unk. (Reportedly a close friend of KIM Il Sung)
8th Regt commander: KIM Song (金成), Lt Col, Age 35.
3rd Bn commander: KIM Sa Am (金士岩), Major, Age 40.
