FIELD REPORT (528 MISPI - 0153) 31 December 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: LIN, Lu (林呂) Chinese

PLACE OF BIRTH: FUKIEN-SHENG, PAILIN-HSIENG, TIENSU

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was a farmer prior to being inducted into the Chinese Nationalist Army. PW was cooperative but of below average intelligence. Interrogation was conducted through a Korean interpreter who has knowledge of Chinese and evaluation of information obtained should be assessed accordingly. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was inducted into the Chinese Nationalist Army Jun 49 at FUKIEN-SHENG (福建省). After serving for approx one year, PW was captured by the Chinese Communist Army at KWANGSI (廣西省) Jun 50. PW was then sent to MUKDEN and was assigned to an unknown unit. After remaining at MUKDEN for two months, PW’s unit moved to ANTUNG and Sep 50 the unit crossed the YALU River and entered KOREA. After crossing the river, PW’s unit marched (nights only) for approx three days and arrived at TAECHON (YE1322). At this location, PW learned from his Co CO that his unit was the 40th Army, 39th Div, 11th Regt, 2nd Bn, 6th Co. Also learned that the three Divs assigned to the 40th Army were redesignated as the 38th, 39th, and 40th Divs (original destinations unknown). From TAECHON, PW’s unit marched (during night only) to vic of Hill 87 (CT 1506) arriving on 27 Dec 50. Route of travel unknown to PW. At this location, PW’s unit was engaged in repairing roads. On 30 Dec 50, PW came down from the mountain and while searching for food, he was captured by elements of the 1st ROK Div.

b. Unit Organization and Strength:
The 40th Army consisted of the 38th, 39th, and 40th Divs. The 39th Div consisted of the 10th, 11th, and 12th Regts. Each Regt consisted of 3 Bns. Each Bn consisted of 3 Rifle Cos and HMG Co. Each Rifle Co consisted of three Rifle Plats and LMG Sqd. Each Rifle Plat consisted of 3 Sqds. Each HMG Co consisted of 3 Plats with 3 Sqds per Plat.
Present strength of 2nd Bn, 11th Regt approx 400. Strength of 6th Co approx 90 (Original strength approx 105). Strength of 1st Plat, 6th Co approx 25 (Original strength approx 30). Strength of Regt and Div u/k.

c. Equipment:
Each Rifle Co had 3 LMGs, 6 U.S. carbines, 6 U.S. “Grease Guns”, and u/k number of U.S. rifles. Each man also carried 4 hand grenades (Chinese make). All officers were armed with pistols (type u/k). The HMG Co had 2 x 60m/m mortars and 4 HMGs. PW heard that the 11th Regt had 2 mortars larger than 60m/m (Exact size u/k).

d. Unit Assignment and Intentions:
PW heard from his Co CO that they crossed the border in order to assist the NKA and also to protect CHINA.
PW also heard that they were told to hold positions along the North bank of the IMJIN River.

e. Disposition:
PW observed the 39th Div Hq in a mountain approx 7 miles from Hill 87 (CT 1506) 27 Dec 50. Also stated that the 11th Regt Hq was located in a mountain approx 3 miles from CT 1506. (Exact locations of above Hqs unknown)

f. Communication:
Runners were used to maintain communication between Bn Hq and the Cos. Other methods of communication unknown to PW.

g. Personalities:
LI, Je-len (Phonetic) 2nd Bn CO
WAN, Chien ( 〃 ) 6th Co CO

h. Armor and Artillery:
No tanks or artillery pieces were observed by PW since crossing the border.

i. Morale and Propaganda:
Morale of PW’s unit was low due to lack of food and ammunition. PW stated that all men were afraid of UN air attacks and artillery. PW also stated that he picked up several “Surrender Leaflets” but threw them away as he could not read them. No aerial broadcasts were heard by PW.

4. GENERAL:
a. Food and Ammo Supplies:
PW stated that food was foraged locally and that all men of his Co ate once or twice a day.
Each man carried 100 rds which were issued at MANCHURIA. No additional ammo was received since crossing the border.

b. Replacements:
No replacements were received since crossing the border.

c. U.S. Prisoners of War:
While at TAECHON, PW heard from his Co CO that approx 60 U.S. soldiers were captured by the 12th Regt (date u/k).
