PWs, prior to entering KOREA were assigned to the 38th Army Replacement Regt (3,000 men) and this Regt was split into three Bns, each being assigned to a Div (112th, 113th, 114th) of the 38th Army in Nov at TOKCH’ON. PWs believed the reason for this was to strengthen the manpower and also to relieve the weary troops.
Prior to separation from their unit 20 Dec (approx 4 kms S of YONGCH’ON) the 1st Bn had approx 520 men. At that time, the entire 114th Div was assembled at this area but the location of the various CPs were unknown. The Div strength was unknown but the 342nd Regt had approx 2,100 men.
The destination of the 1st Bn was unknown, however, when the PWs were left behind 20 Dec, they were told to follow signs which would be placed along roads usually at the forks and on the ground which would guide them to the unit. These signs were written in the snow or with lime on the ground.
According to the PWs, the 342nd (9th) Regt acted as an advance element of the 114th Div and were followed by the 340th (7th) and the 341st (8th) Regts of the Division and further that the 114th Div was the advance unit of the 38th Army followed by the 112th, 113th Divs and the 38th Army Hqs.
PW was told by the Co CO that the mission of the 38th Army was to envelop the 38th parallel-SEOUL axis.
O/a 13 Dec, near P’YONGYANG, the PWs heard that 5 Armies (Designation unknown) were to participate in an allout frontal offensive.
The 4th Field Army was composed of the 38th Army, the 39th Army, the 40th Army, the 41st Army and the 42nd Army.
