FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI - 1279) 11 December 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Semi-cooperative; as PW is illiterate and was unobservant, information is not detailed.
Though very limited, information seems to be fairly reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF UNITS (As of 2 Dec 50)
25th Regiment is composed of 3 Battalions.
1st Battalion is composed of the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Rifle Companies.
2nd Company is composed of the Rifle Platoons.
Each platoon is supposed to be composed of 4 squads, but because of a shortage of personnel, each platoon is composed of only 1 squad.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS: (As of 2 Dec 50)
25th Regiment Headquarters in the mountains approximately 20 Km NE of CHUNCHON (CS 8993).
10th Division Headquarters in an unidentified village approximately 30 Km NE of YANGGU (DT 1117).

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted into the NKA on 6 Aug 50, at NANAM.
Received absolutely no training.
Departed from NANAM with approximately 1,000 other recruits on 26 Aug 50, marched and arrived at KUMCHON (approx 60 Km NW of TAEGU) during Sep 50.
Departed from KUMCHON (retreating) on the day PW arrived at KUMCHON, marched with approximately 30 recruits, and arrived at CHOMBANG (approx 28 Km North of YANGGU on the road to the Diamond Mountains) o/a 10 Nov 50. There, PW was assigned to the 10th Division which was in the process of being reorganized and was then composed of approximately 8,000 men.
Departed from CHOMBANG on 12 Nov 50, marched with the 25th and 27th Regiments (route unknown) and arrived at CHUNCHON on the "heels" of withdrawing ROK Police o/a 22 Nov 50.
Departed from CHUNCHON and arrived approximately 12 Km South of CHUNCHON with the 1st Battalion of the 25th Regiment o/a 23 Nov 50. Then marched (retreated) with the 1st Battalion o/a 25 Nov 50, arriving in the mountains approximately 20 Km NE of CHUNCHON, o/a 27 Nov 50.
Deserted from the NKA on 2 Dec 50, and walked to TONG MYON (approx 12 Km SE of CHUNCHON) where PW surrendered to ROK Police at 021700 Nov 50.

6. PERSONALITIES:

7. REPLACEMENT:
The 25th Regiment had received no replacements (as of 2 Dec 50) since its reorganization during Nov 50.

8. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Received an average of 3 rice balls daily since joining the 10th Division o/a 10 Nov 50. Source of the rations unknown.
The 25th Regiment received 1 U.S. 81 mm Mortar plus an unknown amount of mortar ammo o/a 22 Nov 50.

9. MORALE:
Because of insufficient clothing to protect men from the extreme cold, personnel of the 25th Regiment had low morale.

10. GENERAL INFORMATION:
At least 50% of the personnel in the 10th Division were civilian clothing. Most of the men that are uniformed have only summer uniforms.

11. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
PW surrendered voluntarily because he feared freezing to death if he remained in the NKA as he had no winter clothing. (PW was wearing mixed NKA summer uniform and civilian clothing).
b. Did you see any United Nations leaflets or hear any loudspeaker broadcast?
PW observed no UN leaflets and heard no loudspeaker broadcast.
c. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcast? What did they say or do?
PW heard some of the 25th Regiment soldiers say that they had seen UN leaflets promising humane treatment to PWs, but the soldiers doubted the validity of promises made in the leaflets.
