1. PERSONAL DETAILS

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was a farmer prior to being drafted into the Chinese Communist Army. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. PW had a little knowledge of Japanese. PW spoke freely and information obtained seems fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION
a. Chronology.
PW was drafted by the Chinese Communist Army at YENKILSENG (延吉縣) 2 Oct 50 and was assigned to the 2nd Co, 1st Bn, 348th Regt, 116th Div, 39th Army located at LIAOYANG (遼陽) 6 Oct 50 as interpreter. 20 Oct 50, the 116th Div departed for ANTUNG arriving on the following day. 22 Oct 50, the 30th Army crossed the YALU River and marched to KUSONG (XE9328) via ULJU (XE3050) arriving o/a 24 Oct 50. From KUSONG, the 39th Army moved to TAECHON (YE1322) arriving o/a 25 Oct 50. At TAECHON, the 3 Divs of the 39th Army separated and the 115th Div processed to PAKCHON (YE2201), the 116th Div to UNSAN (YE3928), and the 117th Div to IPSOKHAONG (YE3926). 116TH Div arrived at UNSAN o/a 27 Oct 50 and was engaged. From UNSAN, the 348th Regt processed to vic of TAECHON (YE1322) and then to MAJANG-DONG (YE1028). From MAJANG-DONG, the 348th Regt moved to YONGBYON (YE4011), date of arrival u/k. From YONGBYON, the 348th Regt moved to vic of CHONGCGON River (exact location u/k and joined the other Regts of the 116th Div. The 348th Regt again separated from the other Regts of the 116th Div and moved to KAECHON (date u/k). At KAECHON, PW observed approx. 300 soldiers of the 38th Army. From KAECHON (YD5496) the 348th Regt moved to vic of KORANGPO (GT1106) via YONGWON-NI (YD4692), SUNCHON (YD 5367), SANGWON (BU4803), SOHUNG (BT5359), SINMAK (BT5856), NAMCHONJON (BT7346), KUMCHON (BT7926), UICHON (BT9437), PANBURI (CT1308). PW and 6 others were captured by the 11th ROK Regt on 241600 Dec 50 while hiding in a trench at KORANGPO.

b. Unit Strength.
Original strength of 1st Bn approx. 500, present strength approx. 400. Original strength of 2nd Co approx. 160, present strength approx 120.

c. Equipment.
Personnel of the 2nd Co were armed with rifles and hand grenades. PW also observed u/k number of MGs and 2 mortars (size u/k) in 2nd Co.

d. Disposition.
PW stated that the 348th Regt CP was located approx 2 km N or CHANG-DONG (CT1108) on 24 Dce 50. Also stated that the 1st Bn, 348th Regt, CP was located at CHANG-DONG (CT1108) and the 3rd Bn CP at NOEAM-DONG (CT1007)

e. Intentions.
PW heard from the Co CO that they were to cross the IMJIN River but were unable to do so due to constant UN air strikes.

f. Morale and propaganda.
Morale of PW’s unit was low due to constant air strikes and arty firing by UN surrender leaflets at YONGBYON and also heard broadcasts from air planes, however, all men were told by their officers that it is not true and that they would be killed if they surrendered.

4. GENERAL
a. Food Supply.
Food was procured locally. PW stated that receipts were issued in lieu of money when food was procured from the farmers. Food supply was insufficient and men were fed only twice a day.

b. U.S. POWs.
PW observed approx. 30 U.S. PWs at UNSAN 29 Oct 50.

c. Replacements.
After the battle of UNSAN, personnel were transferred from other Cos, however, no replacements were received from China.
