ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO 2853　13 January 1951

FIELD REPORT (528 MISPI – 0147)　27 November 1950

PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was formerly a Chinese Nationalist soldier and was integrated into the CCF. PW was very cooperative and of above average intelligence. Interrogation was conducted through a Korean interpreter who has knowledge of Chinese and evaluation of information should be assessed accordingly. Recommend for further interrogation.

PW was inducted into the Chinese Nationalist Army and was assigned to the 3rd Regt (FENTOU TISANTUAN) (奮鬪 第三團) in Jul 47 at TAIYUAN-SHIH (太原市). Upon assignment, PW was appointed a WO. During the period Jul 47 to Dec 47, PW worked in the administration section of the 3rd FENTOU Regt. In Dec 47, PW was transferred to the CHINHSUN-FUWUTUI (親訓 服務隊) and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. In Feb 49, PW was transferred to the 19th Army Div Hq, Political Liaison Communication Section at TAIYUAN and was promoted to 1st Lt. On 22 Apr, PW was captured by the CCF at TAIYUAN and sent to a indoctrination camp at SHANSISHENG, PINGTING-HSIEN (山西省 平定縣). There were approx. 2,000 Chinese Nationalist officers in the camp. PW received approx. two months of indoctrination on communism and was transferred to another indoctrination camp at HOPEH-SHENG, SHIHCHIACHUANG (河北省 石家莊) in Jun 49. In Apr 50, PW was assigned as a clerk to the 66th Army, 196th Div, 586th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co at TIENTSIN (天津). During the period Apr 50 to Oct 50, at TIENTSIN, majority of the troops in the 66th Army were utilized for farming in areas formerly tilled by Koreans and Japanese under the Japanese Government. The 196th Div departed TIENTSIN 22 Oct by train and arrived at ANTUNG 25 Oct 50. PW had no knowledge to when the other 2 Divs of the 66th Army departed TIENTSIN. The 196th Div departed ANTUNG by train on the night of 26 Oct 50 and crossed the YALU River bridge to SINUIJU. Upon arrival on the same night, the 196th Div departed by foot and arrived at CHOLSAN (XE2402) on the morning of 27 Oct 50. The 196th Div stayed in the hills and on 28 Oct 50 departed on foot and arrived in the vic of NUSI-DONG (XE7217) o/a Nov 50. From 1 Nov to 23 Nov 50, the 196th Div moved daily from hills to hills in the vic of NAMSI-DONG. On 23 Nov 50, PW’s suit marched to approx. 36km SE of NAMSI-DONG. During the movement to encircle a ROK Unit on 24 Nov 50, PW became separated from his unit and was captured by ROK Troops 240800 Nov 50.

The 66th Army consisted of the 196th, 197th, & 197th, & 198th Divs. The 196th Div consisted of the 586th, 587th, &588th Regts and a Mountain Gun Bn. The 586th Regt consisted of 3 Bns, one 82mm Mortar Co, one Guard Co, and one Hqs Co. Each Bn consisted of 3 Rifle Cos and a HW Co. Each Rifle Co consisted of 3 Rifle Plats and a 60mm mortar Plat. Each Rifle Plat consisted of 3 Rifle Sqds and a IMG Sqd. The 60mm Mortar Plat consisted of 3 Sqds.

The Mountain Gun Bn had 9 Guns (size u/k). Each HW Co was equipped with 4 HMGs and 2 Mortars (size u/k). the 60mm Mortar Plat had 3 X 60mm mortars. No information on recoilless weapons or rocket launchers.

Telephone and runners were the only means of communication observed by PW.

Morale of PW’s unit was very low due to constant strafing by UN planes and inferior weapons compared to UN weapons. PW stated that he heard from an officer that the CCF out-numbers the UN Forces, but in case of a crisis, Russia will aid the CCF. PW stated that he picked up a propaganda leaflet which was written in Korean.

Food was procured locally. Only two days supply of food was carried by each man when crossing the border. No other information available

PW heard at Bn Hq that two U.S. airmen were captured in vic of NAMSI-DONG when they parachuted from a plane. Also heard that both PWs were sent to Div Hq. No other information available.
