2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was intelligent and cooperative. Claimed from the outset that he was a loyal supporter of the Kuomintang Party and expressed eagerness to serve the interests of anti-communist forces in any capacity. Reliability - Fair.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
1924 - Born in TAIYUAN (太原), SHANTUNG where he resided with his family until Jul 41 when he went to FUYANG (富陽), ANHWEI (安徽) Province to attend middle school
1942 - Entered Central Military Training School (中央 陸軍 軍官 學校) at FUYANG (阜陽), ANHWEI. Graduated at HSIAN (西安), SHANHSI (山西) where school had been re-established.
Dec 46 - Was assigned to Hq 92nd Army (CNA) at PEIPING, CHINA, as training officer. 92nd Army was transferred to TIENTSIN (天津) where PW served until March 1948. Served in the general North CHINA area, participating in various operations against CCF in the North CHINA campaign until defection of the 92nd Army at PEIPING (北平) in January 49.
Jan 49 - Inducted into 66th Army, CCF, Hq 197th Div (part of 20th Army Corps) as staff officer in Operations and Training Section, serving until Mar 50. During Mar - Apr 49s the 66th Army fought YEN HSI SHAN's CNA forces at TAIYUAN (大原), SHANHSI (山西).
Apr - May 49 - 20th Army Corps received the surrender of YEN HSI SHAN’s CNA forces at TATUNG (大同), SHANSI Province. Entire 20th Army Corps remained garrisoned in the TATUNG area for approx a month, and then moved on to TIENTSIN.
Jun - Aug 49 - Garrisoned in TIENTSIN area and prepared new training program to commence in Aug 49.
Aug - Dec 49 - Basic training in military discipline, drill, political military and social indoctrination conducted in TIENTSIN area.
Dec - Mar 50 - Field exercises, covering weapons training including 60mm and 82mm mortars, tactical maneuvers, etc.
Mar - Jul 50 - Troops of 20th Army Corps were put to work on land reclamation projects in the TIENTSIN area under military control with directions for increased food production.
Aug 50 - 20th Army Corps commenced screening for physically unfit personnel for discharge, resulting in the dismissal of some 12% for disability.
Replacements were drawn from the 208th Independent Division then stationed in the ANTUNG (安東) area, MANCHURIA, and dissolved as a unit upon assignment of its troops to various elements of the 20th Army Corps.
Oct 50 - Elements of 20th Army Corps administratively reorganized and all troops given further intensive training with emphasis on hand-to-hand combat. Only the 66th Army departed TIENTSIN for ANTUNG, MANCHURIA on 22 Oct 50 by train via SHANHAIKWAN (山海關), MUKDEN, arriving ANTIDNG evening of 24 Oct 50. 67th and 68th Army remained in TIENTSIN so far as PW knows. On the eve of departure, troops were informed they were leaving for an undisclosed destination. Enroute, PW’s Regimental Commander informed his staff they were going to MANCHURIA. PW not having become a member of the Communist Party was never taken into confidence but claimed he was retained in the staff because of his military training and kept under constant surveillance.
24 Oct 50 - 66th Army detrained immediately upon arrival at NTUNG and crossed Yalu River same night on foot, via steel bridge just outside of ANTUNG. The bridge had a single RR track. There was another bridge of same size and design alongside the one PW’s unit took. Both bridges in operation, bore no marks of damage.
25 Oct 50 – During early morning hours, arrived MASAN-DONG (馬山洞) approx 20km SE of SINUIJU (新義州). Departed for SUYONGCH'ANG-NI (隧容倉里) about 10 km NE of SONCH’ON (宣川), travelling at night via mountain foot paths. Remained here for 3 days, contacting UN elements for the first time. PW learned UN troops immediately to the front were elements of a British Division.
30 Oct 50 - 66th Army moved eastward toward KURIM-NI (九林里) approx 6km SW of KUSONG for purposes of cutting off US Forces which were then in occupation of KUSONG.
31 Oct 50 - Arrived in vicinity of KURIM-NI and commenced preparing camouflage positions, digging-in in the mountains.
1 Nov 50 - Contacted US Forces during the night with light patrol action and blew up one of two small wooden bridges.
6 - 25 Nov 50 - During this period, the 66th Army was deployed in the KUSONG area. The 196th and 198th Div straddled the rail line southward out of KUSONG to NAMSI (南市) and the 197th Div was on the north beyond KUSONG to SUSONG-NI (守松里), and due East of KUSONG along the north side of and overlooking the T'AECH'ON - KUSONG Road. Elements of the 39th Army and 50th Army were deployed to the NE and SE of the 66th Army respectively in contact. Plan was to permit UN convoys to go forward and then attack from the rear in force which PW’s unit did. During this particular operations, PW claims to have escaped and surrendered to US forward units, revealing to his captors details of the tactical situation outlined herein.

4. SIGNAL EQUIPMENT:

b. Bn to Regt - Telephone and Radiophone. Range of radio - 25 kms (17 miles) on flat terrain and 8 – 10 miles over mountainous terrain. Battery powered.
c. Regt to Div - Tele and Radio. Range of radio - 50 km (30 miles) on flat terrain and 25 km (17 miles) over mountainous terrain. Powered by hand generation.
d. Div to army - Radio (morse code). Range - 250 km (170 miles). Powered by hand generator.
Some of the equipment observed was us made, believed captured from CNA forces but others were, according to PW, foreign made parts assembled by CCF technicians. PW understood that component parts and other semi-assembled parts were of foreign manufacture.
