3. MILITARY HISTORY:
Sep 46 - Volunteered into CNA 10th Div, 85th Brig, Special Duty Co at WAN YUAN HSIEN.
Nov 46 - The 85th Brig moved to KAI HSIEN (開縣) SZECHWAN Province. Then to SHENSI (陝西) Province.
Jun 49 - While en route to his home in SZECHWAN Province PW was caught by CNA UOth. Army, 140th Div, 420th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co.
Jul 49 - 140th Div moved to a place located on the border of SHENSI and SZECHWAN Provinces.
o/a 10 Oct 49 – PW’s unit surrendered to CCF somewhere near the border of SHENSI and SZECHWAN Provinces. PW heard that the 15th and 16th CNA Army Groups surrendered to CCF about this time. The CNA units retained their designations.
Apr 50 - With the 140th Div PW departed SZECHWAN Province on foot and walked for about a month then boarded a ship and arrived at WUCHIANG HSIEN (吳江縣) near SHANGHAI. Here PW trained with the Div.
Sep 50 - 16th CNA Army Group assembled at SHANTUNG Province and redesignated the CCF 9th Army Group.
3 Nov 50 - PW was assigned to the 20th Army, 60th Div, 179th Regt, 3rd Bn, 8th Co 3 days later the 179th Regt departed SHANTUNG Province by train and arrived at a small town on the YALU River about 4 days later. The following morning PW observed UN planes flying above and AA guns firing at them. Then the 179th Regt continued marching into KOREA. Movement was only at night and PW did not see any other CCF units but only saw NKA stragglers in small numbers.
9 Dec 50 - The 179th Regt for the first time engaged UN troops in the vicinity of MAJON DONG, but PW believed that only the 9th Co was actually fighting the UN troops. PW did not know if there were other CCF units in the vicinity. The 179th Regt was badly defeated in this engagement and PW believed that casualties was very heavy which were caused mostly by UN aircraft. PW could not run due to his mild case of trench foot so he and another man from his unit stayed in a Korean home and they were captured by advancing UN troops 10 Dec 50.

4. ORGANIZATION:
The 9th Army Group was in the 3rd Field Army, but PW did not know what other Army Groups were in the 3rd Field Army. During a lecture at SHANGHAI around Aug 50 PW heard that there were 5,000,000 men in the 4 CCF Field Armies.
There were 5 armies in the 9th Army Group, but PW only knew that the 20th Army was in this army group. The 20th Army consisted of the 60th Div and 2 other unknown Divs. The 60th Div was composed of the 178th, 179th and 180th Regts. The 179th Regt consisted of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Inf Bns and in addition a Med Co, a Guard Co and a Mortar Co attached to the Regt.
The 3rd Bn to which PW was assigned consisted of the 7th, 8th and 9th Rifle Cos and a HMG and Mortar Co. There were 3 Rifle Plats and a Mortar Plat in each Co. Each Rifle Plat consisted of 3 Sqds.
Sqd:12 men
Plat:36-40 men
Co:120-125 men
Bn:550 men
179th Regt:Number of men unknown
The above figures indicates the number of men when the unit was first organized, but since the Regt left CHINA there were some deserters and PW believes that the 179th Regt suffered heavy loss in personnel and equipment after engaging UN forces in KOREA.

5. WEAPONS:
4 HMG's and 2 x 82mm mortars in the HMG and Mortar Co. 2 x 60mm mortars and 9 LMG's in each Rifle Co. Each rifle man was armed with a rifle with 80 rds of ammo and 4 hand grenades. There were a few US carbines. Men without arins were employed in carrying ammo and food.

6. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
PW heard from his Co political affairs officer that RUSSIA was going to give airplanes to CCF, but has not heard or seen any Russian aircraft.
Morale in PW’s Co was low due to insufficient food and clothing and many men wanted to desert, but they were watched closely by their superiors. After the food that the men carried on them was gone they lived off the land. At times they went without food for 2 or 3 days because there were no food at Korean homes. The food had already been taken by CCF units before them. The CCF paid for the rice, but when the Korean asked for a high price they took it without paying and they always wrote a receipt.
PW believes that the CCF units can't keep up with the present rate of advance due to climatic condition. During clear days they were dry, but when it snowed their clothing became wet and it was bitterly cold. Another reason is that the CCF do not have any aircraft or heavy guns. Morale was low due to insufficient food, no pay, lack of sleep, and the officers slept in houses while the men slept out in the open. The men were previously told that they would receive the same type of treatment as the officers and thus conform to Communistic ideology.

For the Commanding Officer:
