1812001 Nov 50, the unit was attacked by the enemy. Due to the surprise and severe firing of enemy heavy arms the unit fled north over the same route on which they had come. Instead of retreating with his unit PW remained in the mountains, because of frost bite which made him lag from the unit. That night when PW came down from the mountain for some food, he was captured by ROK troops.
In PW's Heavy Weapons Co there were 4 HMG (8,000 rounds per gun), three 120mm Mortars (40 rounds per mortar), and 4 pistols (200 rounds each). PW stated that weapons were all Chinese made and manufactured at TSITSIHAR, MANCHURIA.
Food for PW's unit was looted from Korean farmers and villagers. Food consisted of boiled ears of corn and rice. They were allotted two meals per day (700 grams).
PW stated that the only clothes he received were cotton padded shirt, trousers, one pair shoes, one pair cotton socks, and a cap when departing KAIYUEN. Since coming to KOREA PW did not receive any new supply.
The communication between Co and Bn CP was conducted by field phone. In each Co there was a field phone. Bn to Regt CP was also by field phone. In the Regt Hq there were 4 field phones. When a field phone was not in operation the units used message runners.
The mission of the 3rd Regt was to annihilate the enemy troops who were located south of the Hill 814. PW did not know the reason for this mission or how they were to accomplish it.
