KAIMA PENINSULA, near WONSAN
The hard packed white, sandy beach on the east coast of the KALMA Peninsula extended about 4km in length and 50m in width.
A pine forest (about 5m high) extended south to north about 200m between the beach and the airfield (see sketch) about 60m from shore to the airfield. The area immediately north of the airfield was flat sandy land, however, there were fairly high hills ranging from 20-30m on the northern tip of the peninsula.
There were mountains ranging from 10m to 70m on the south of the airfield. Two underground hangars (30m x 30m x 8m) were dug into the side of these hills. (see sketch)
The west coast of the peninsula had steep banks about 2-3m above sea level. No boats were seen on the west coast area.
The main road from WONSAN to the airfield was an asphalt road about 6m wide. This road extended across the airfield and ran parallel to the shore circumventing the peninsula. (from the airfield the road was a 6m dirt road)
An asphalt road about 6m wide extended from the airfield to the beach (see sketch). This peninsula was placed off limits from Feb ‘47. Reason was not clear.
Heard that the entire peninsula had been fortified (details unknown).
Depth and further details of the beach was unknown.
There was no noticeable fluctuation of tide.
