2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and fairly intelligent. However, he was not very observant and was unable to give details of the airfield. Reliability fair.

Chronology:
Oct 34: PW family immigrated to SANYUANP’U (三源浦), MANCHURIA, and they were engaged in farming.
Sep 44: PW graduated the higher primary school at SANYUANP’U and was engaged in farming.
Jan 46: He entered a special Korean language school and studied his native language for a period of 8 months.
Apr 47: PW, together with his family, moved from SANYUANP’U to NANSHIH (南市), N. KOREA.

TUNGHUA Airfield (通化):
Observation:
PW observed TUNGHUA airfield twice during 1943 from a distance of 700 m and once during Apr 47 while passing the road located 500 m west of the airfield.
Location:
The airfield was located 4 km south of east TUNGHUA RR station and a river 250 m wide was located 700 m west of the airfield. Low mountains were located east of the airfield.
Dimensions:
a. Estimated length and width - 1,000 m x 1,500 m
b. Approximate shape - oblong
Runways and surface:
a. Runways - during 1943, PW observed aircraft take off and he believes no runway was located here because heavy dust-clouds were formed by the prop-wash. PW was unable to observe any runway during his observation Apr 47.
b. Airfield surface - level and sandy surface.
Access:
A narrow dirt road located on the PW side of the airfield lead to the cast TUNGHUA RR station.
Buildings:
a. Hangers - a large building with gabled roof was located on the east portion of the airfield.
b. Billets - a large three-story red brick building was located on the ESE portion of the airfield. 5 or 6 squad-type tents were located along the NW portion of the airfield (Apr 47).
Aircraft Dispersal Points:
PW observed aircraft parked along the NE portion of the airfield (Apr 47).
Obstructions:
Low mountains were located to the east of the airfield but PW does not believe that they were obstructive to any flight operation.
Construction and Improvement:
PW observed the airfield during 1943 and again on Apr 47 and the only change he observed was the tents located on the NW portion of the airfield. Further details unknown.
Administration and Personnel:

Personnel strength: PW observed large number of 8th Route Army soldiers near the airfield but details are unknown.
Aircraft:
PW observed one twin-engine aircraft similar to a bomber and 6 or 7 single-engine fighters parked along the north portion of the airfield. Details unknown (Apr 47).
Security Measures:
The airfield was surrounded by a barbed wire fence 2 m high and guard towers were located all around the airfield at 250 m intervals. Also, a rope-fence 2 m high was located around the airfield 200 outside of the barbed wire fence. Small red triangular flags were attached to the posts of the rope-fence and roving guards were observed between the rope-fence and the barbed wire fence.
