3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
7 Jul 50 - Conscripted in PYONGYANG and assigned to the 17th Div. Received basic training for about a week.
30 Jul 50 - Went to KANDON GUN for further training until 4 Sep 50.
23 Sep 50 - Deserted at SEOUL when unit had a brief encounter with UN forces. Surrendered to Security Police and was kept in INCHON jail until 15 Oct 50, when he was turned over to US forces at INCHON stockade.

17 Div, 2nd Regt, 2nd Bn (10,000 men in Div)
Original Organization & Strength:
17th Brigade - 6,000 men.
Actual Battle Organization and Strength:
17th Div (10,000 men) - 17th Div had one tank regt (3rd) and two Inf Regts. There was a 76mm Arty Co, a 122mm Arty Co, 45mm Arty Co, Communication Co and an automatic Rifle Co attached directly to 2nd Inf Regt. 2nd Regt had 2 Bn’s consisting of 3 rifle Co’s and an AT & a HMG Co. HMG Co (2nd Bn) had 50 men am 6 guns. AT Co. (2nd Bn) had 40 men and 2 × 45mm AT Guns. There were 100 men in each of the rifle Co’s of the 2nd Bn.
Unit History:
7 Jul 50 - The 17 Brig was newly organized with practically all new EM. Officers were all experienced with some of them coming from MANCHURIA.
14 Jul 50 - The 17 Brigade was redesignated the 17th Div. At this time about 4,000 men were added to the Div. All 4,000 came from the MANCHURIA 8th Route Anny and had battle experience in CHINA.
14 Aug 50 - The 1st and 3rd Regts of the 17th Div left PYONGYANG and headed south to fight the UN Forces while the 2nd Regt stayed in PYONGYANG.
4 Sep 50 - The 2nd Regt, left PYONGYANG.
15 Sep 50 - Arrived SEOUL and stayed here as a reserve unit.
22 Sep 50 - 2nd Regt encountered the UN Forces at SEOUL. It is believed that some forces retreated north but probably were annihilated during the battle of SEOUL.

4. REMARKS:PW believes that the 1st, Regt, 17th Div were all N Koreans from the 8th Route Army and most of the officers in the 3rd Regt were N Koreans from the 8th Route Army.
