2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be intelligent. His power of observation and memory were good. Information in this report is believed to be reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
10 May 47: Drafted in the NKPA at KANGGYE (江界) and assigned to the 2nd Co, 1st Bn, 3rd Regt, 1st Div.
5 Jun 47: Transferred to 4th Co, 2nd Bn, 3rd Regt, 1st Div at KANGGYE. Transferred to 4th Co, 2nd Bn, 4th Ind Brig and promoted to Sgt (中士).
7 Mar 50: 4th Ind Brig redesignated 4th Div and PW was assigned to 1st Sqd, HMG Plt, 4th Co, 2nd Bn, 16th Regt. 5th Regt was composed of well-trained NKPA troops and the 18th Regt of former CCF men. At this time major elements of the 16th Regt were stationed at CHIUL-LI (지울里) (near CHINNAMP’O).
10 Mar 50: The 2nd Bn arrived at CHIUL-LI by rail and joined the 16th Regt. Engaged in repairing barracks until 15 Jun.
18 Jun 50: 16th Regt arrived at YONCH’ON (漣川) where regt joined rest of 4th Div. Div dug in defensive positions in the YONCH'ON Area.
25 Jun 50: First action took place. The Div suffered about 100 casualties from ROK artillery.
29 Jun 50: Occupied SEOUL.
2 Jul 50: 2nd Bn of the 16th Regt followed 24 hrs behind the other elements and rejoined them 30 km S of SEOUL.
4 Aug 50: The remainder of the 4th Div followed the advance units (5th Regt and 18th Regts) am arrived at HYOPCH’ON (陜川) via SUWON (水原), P'YONGT'AEK (平澤), CH'ONAN (天安), KONGJU (公州), NONSAN (論山), TAETON, KUMSAN (錦山), and KOCH'ANG (居昌). The advance units fought at SUWON, P'YONGT'AEK and CH'ONAN for brief periods but extent of casualties is unknown.
5 Aug-19 Sep 50: The 4th Div crossed a tributary of the NAKTONG River near CH’ANGNYONG (昌寧) but had to retreat due to enemy artillery. The retreating 4th Div again crossed the tributary in the rear of the 2nd, 6th, 7th, 9th and 15th Divs and the 16th Brig.
20 Sep 50: The divisions which crossed the tributary of the NAKTONG River retreated again completely disorganized. Extent of casualties was unknown. The 16th Regt was annihilated at the NAKTONG River. PW was sent to a rear aid station for a stomachache prior to the retreat of the division. The aid station was located at TOKCHONG-NI (德亭里) (6 km S of HYOPCH'ON).
24 Sep 50: PW was captured at the aid station.


Knowledge of other units:
The divisions retreating from the battle of the NAKTONG River were, according to one of the retreating soldiers, to regroup at HYOPCH'ON.

4. GENERAL:
Strategic information:
The NKPA cotton uniforms were made at cotton spinning mills at SINUIJU, P’YONGYANG and SARlWON (沙里院). An ordnance plant was located near the P'YONGYANG RR station. There were two officer candidate schools in P’YONGYANG and one in HOERYONG (會寧).

Psychological:
The PW stated that his unit was most afraid of the 60mm mortars due to the efficiency and constant use. The majority of the NKPA troops would surrender now if allowed to do so because most of them are recruits.
The US Safe Conduct leaflets were first-picked up in the early part of Sep 50. The majority of the troops did not believe them, as an officer from the political section frequently told them that men who surrender are immediately killed by the UN forces.
