3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
| 25 Dec 48: | PW was inducted into the ROK Army at CHUNCH’ON (春川). received 5 months basic training, and was assigned to the ROK 6th Regt, 8th Bn, 1st Co. |
| 5 May 49: | 8th Bn commander Major P'YO Mu Won (表문원) during the absence of his Regt commander ordered his 8th Bn out for maneuvers. PW’s 1st Co was the leading Co with the |
| Bn commander; with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Cos, following in that order. When the 38° parallel was reached (Major P’YO) then ordered his troops to follow him and started to cross into NK territory. The troops hesitated because of lack of ammunition and notified their Bn Commander about it. (Major P'YO) informed his troops that the border was clear of NK troops and ordered his men to march. Part of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Co troops were very suspicious about their Bn commander’s intentions so turned back against orders and reported back to their headquarters. 1st Co that was in the lead, crossed the 38° parallel and was marched into an ambush that was prearranged between the NK border patrol and PW’s Bn Commander. 1st Co with part of the 2nd Co then was taken to HWACH’ON (華川) and was billeted in a school house, a total of 240 men deserted with the Bn Commander. That same day the 240 deserters departed by truck and arrived at WONSAN (元山) 7 May 50. | |
| 8 May 49: | PW departed by rail and arrived at ANJU (安州) 11 May 49. PW then received further military training and lectures on Communism by the political officers. |
| 6 Aug 49: | PW departed by rail and arrived at HOERYONG (會寧) 9 Aug 49. PW was assigned to the “Independence Bn” (獨立大隊) with a total strength of approx 417 men and received further military trainig until 19 May 50. |
| 20 May 50: | PW departed by rail and arrived at “MANP’O” (滿浦) on or about 25 May 50. “Independence Bn” was redesignated the "Security Unit" (警備隊) and was assigned the mission of guarding the Korean-Manchurian border. |
| 6 Jul 50: | PW departed by rail and arrived at KUMHA (金化) on or about 13 Jul 50. |
| 15 Jul 50: | PW departed by truck and arrived at CH’UNCH'ON (春川) 16 Jul 50. |
| 17 Jul 50: | PW's Security Bn was built up to a Regt. PW was then a part of the Security Force 1st Regt, 7th Bn, 1st Co. |
| 19 Jul 50: | PW departed, marched through WONJU (原州), CHECH’ON (堤川), TANYANG (丹陽), ANDONG (安東) and arrived at YONGDOK (盈德) o/a 15 Sep 50. PW’s Regt then had the mission of guarding the rear area and coastal defenses of YONGDOK. PW, after the attack by ROK troops on 24 Sep, surrendered 25 Sep 50. |
Original Organization & Strength;

2nd Sqd - 7 men, (Sr Sgt and Sgt plus 5 Pvts)
The original organization and strength was intact. The 1st Regt was never committed up to date of PW's surrender.
Equipment:
5 x 82mm M1937 mortars in the regiment. Men armed with M1891/30 rifles, 100 rounds.
Communications:
Trail and roads in YONGDOK Area were fair. Telephone lines always in repair.
Personalities:
Col P’YO Mu Won (표무원), Commanding Officer of the “Security” forces. Col P'YO Mu Won was promoted 2 grades after deserting the ROK Army for the NKPA.
Morale and Propaganda:
PW saw his first propaganda leaflets 24 Sep 50. PW felt that since he bad served with the ROK Army prior to joining up with the NKPA Army, whatever was written on the leaflets was true. PW never believed the lies handed out by the political officers about UN treatment of PsW. The morale of the Security Force was fair up to date of surrender. Food situation was very good. PW ate at least one good meal a day. The troops usually ate twice a day. Mail situation from home seemed to be a big problem among the troops.
