FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI - 0237) 28 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAIILS:
PW NAME: CHONG Chi Kun
AGE: 26

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and seemed intelligent. He was willing and did not hesitate in answering questions. Tactical information unavailable for PW deserted his unit 23 Feb 51. Information seems fairly reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
23 Feb 51, 7th Div was engaged with UN Forces and after being defeated, retreated northward. PW then deserted his unit at TUSAN-NI (DS2929) and traveled southward to SONGGYE-RI (DS2927) where he was captured by UN troops 280900 Feb 51. PW deserted his unit intending to surrender to UN Forces.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Intentions:
20 Feb 51, the 7th Div went to vic 2 km N of SONGHAK-SAN (DS3517) to set up defensive positions together with the 12th Div. The 7th and 12th Div plans were disrupted when they were attacked by UN Forces 21 Feb 51 and forced to retreat northward.
22 Feb 51, both the 7th and 12th Div stopped at TUSAN-NI (DS2929); then 23 Feb 51, they retreated further north towards ANHUNGMYON. 12th Div retreated north along the CHUCHON GANG (river) while the 7th Div retreated north by passing HAIRI (DS2931) along a small river. Heard from Co CO that the 7th Div was to regroup and reorganize at ANHUNG-MYON.

b. Strength:
Strength of the 7th Div 21 Feb 51 was estimated to be about 2,500 men and it’s elements were the 1st, 2d and 3d Regt (800 men per Regt). PW unit (I & R Plat) had only 15 men and all had PPSH SMG (200 rd ea). Weapons observed in the 3d Regt were 4 x 82mm mortars (30 rd ea). 4 HMG (300 rd ea). Riflemen had Russian rifles (30 rd ea), US M-1 rifles and PPSH SMG.

c. Mission:
I & R Plat went on patrol on an average of once per day to determine UN Forces’ strength, weapons, tanks, and machine gun positions. Last report submitted from I & R Plat to Regt Hq was made in vic 2 km N of SONGHAK-SAN (DS3517).

d. 4th Phase Operation:
O/a 20 Feb 51, heard from a Political Officer that the last big push made by CCF and NKA was not included in the 4th Phase Offensive and that the 4th Phase Offensive had not as yet begun.

e. Clothing:
About 70% of troops wore winter uniforms while the other 30% wore civilian clothing.

f. Medical:
2-3 men evacuated to Div hospital daily after contacting unknown disease. Symptoms were high fever and chills.

g. Food:
Insufficient.

h. Morale:
Morale of troops low due to lack of food and insufficient supply of ammo.
