PW not observant while with his unit. Estimation of strength and dispositions of troops doubtful, but other information seems fairly reliable.
22 Feb 51 PW deserted his unit approx 8 km N of PYONGCHANG, because he was wounded in his leg and walked S intending to surrender to UN Forces. He voluntarily surrendered to UN Troops about 1 km N of KYEYA (DS2925).
a. Withdrawal:
O/a 20 Feb 51, 2d and 3d Regt of 1st Div consisting of approx 3,000 men came to approx 8 km S of PYONGCHANG (DS4735) but retreated N after engaging UN Troops for 3 days.
b. T/O & E:
Elements of 1st Bn of 3d Regt, 1st Div were the 1st, 2d, 3d Rifle Co, HMG Co and Mortar Co.
Strength of Bn was estimated to be approx 500. 1st Bn had 1 unk size mortar (3 rd), 15 HMG with 500 rd ea, 18 LMG with 400 rd ea, 7 AT rifles with 50 rd ea, 20 PPSH SMG (50 rd ea) in each Co and each soldier was armed with rifle (100 rd ea) and 2 hand grenades. (Sic)
c. Mission:
22 Feb 51 PW heard from Plat Ldr that the objective of 3d Regt was YONGWOL (DS5315).
d. 4th Phase Operation:
O/a 12 Feb 51, heard from Plat Ldr that they were in the 4th Phase of Operation.
e. Ammo Supply:
No ammo supply after arriving in SK.
f. Food Supply:
2 meals per day; obtained from villages; was insufficient.
g. Clothing:
Every soldier was in winter uniform.
h. Physical Condition:
Poor, because of fatigue and insufficient sleep and food. 50% of his unit were suffering from frostbite.
i. Medical:
Never heard of or observed any cases of contagious diseases in his unit.
j. Morale:
Very low, because of insufficient sleep and food, heavy air and Arty bombardment.
