FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI - 0214) 26 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative in answering questions and information received seems to be reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
21 Feb 51, PW separated from his unit when they retreated North from vic of DS2927 and hid in one of the houses.
1600 hours, 25 Feb 51, PW came out from the house and voluntarily surrendered to US Troops.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Disposition:
O/a 16 Feb 51, 2d Regt of 12th Div consisting of approx 1000 men and elements of 7th Div (left flank) came to hill area (approx location DS2825) and were dug in. On the night of 20 Feb 51 they attacked UN troops but they scattered after receiving heavy air attack and shelling on the following morning. PW heard from a soldier that one-third of the troops were killed or wounded in this battle. Heard that the troops will regroup at 8 km North of DS2825 (small village). 21 Feb 51, PW separated from group and hid in one of the houses located vic of DS2927.

b. Organization, Strength and Weapons:
Elements of 2d Bn of 2d Regt, 12th Div were the 4th, 5th, 6th Rifle Co, HMG Co, Mortar Co. Strength was estimated to be 300. Weapons of 2d Bn (as of 16 Feb 51).
1 x 82 mm Mortar (40-50 rd)
2 HMG (US make) (5 cases of ammo ea)
5 LMG
1 PPSH SMG per sqd (200 rd)
Most of the soldiers had Soviet rifles with 50-150 rd.

c. Stragglers:
21 Feb 51, observed approx 300 stragglers retreating toward North along CHUCHON-GANG at the location DS2825. They were armed with rifles.

d. Mission:
Heard from Co CO as well as plat ldr that their mission was to break through UN defense line and attack the UN forces from the rear while the CCF unit make a frontal attack.

e. Ammo Supply:
None after arriving S KOREA.

f. Food Supply:
Obtained from villages, was insufficient.

g. Clothing:
All wore winter uniforms.

h. Physical Condition:
Poor from fatigue.

i. Medical:
Heard from plat ldr that there are few cases of unknown type of disease spreading in other unit so men were ordered to take precaution to keep themselves and their clothing clean.

j. Morale:
Appeared to be high, because of strong propaganda.
