Cooperative in answering all questions, but did not have any knowledge of his unit in detail. Information seems fairly reliable.
PW was a resident of S KOREA who was conscripted into the NKA. Attempting to return home, he deserted his unit at SANGGO-RI 23 Feb 51 and was captured at SANGGO-RI 28 Feb 51.
a. Withdrawal:
23 Feb 51 3d Regt of the 7th Div with an estimated strength of 500 men were retreating from their defensive position 6 km S of SANGGO-RI (DS2641) in the direction of WONJU via SANGGO-RI.
b. Mission:
Originally the objective of the 7th Div was to surround and take WONJU, but orders were changed 20 Feb 51 to set up a defense line with the 12th Div along the southern side of mt range running east and west 6 km below SANGGO-RI.
This position was abandoned by the 7th and 12th Div after receiving 3 days of continuous Arty and air bombardment. 1st and 2d Regt of the 7th Div and the 12th Div were not observed during the retreat, but heard from a friend that these units were headed NW in direction of WONJU.
c. Weapons:
Weapons of 3d Regt: 1 HMG (500 rd), 1 LMG to a Plat, 4 PPSH SMG to a Plat (60 rd ea), and all armed with Russian rifles (300 rd ea) and 2 hand grenades per man.
d. Clothing:
All wore winter uniform.
e. Food:
Insufficient; troops fed 1-2 times a day.
f. Morale:
Half of the troops are members of the Communist Party and are in high spirits. The other half are disgusted and disappointed in the communist ways and do not want to fight.
g. Medical:
None appeared among troops. No immunizations given.
h. Physical Condition:
Weak, because of lack of food and sleep. One-third suffering from frostbite.
