FIELD REPORT (521 LDI 0467) 20 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative, but info limited. Attitude: Fair, Reliability: Fair.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Served 3 yr with CNA and 11/2 yr with CCF.
20 Dec 50 - PW arr MUKDEN with “HANYAN (FUBO Provinces)” Security Bn (performed farming and guard duties at HANYAN). 3 other Bn arrived from FUBO Province and organized a Repl Regt (strength - 2,000 men, consisted of 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th Bn). Regt received tng, which consisted mostly of marching thru mt trails at night, combat lectures, and anti-US propaganda indoctrination daily for about 2 wk. Instructors included 30-40 off selected from Div of the 40th Army.
5 Jan 51 - Repl Regt departed MUKDEN by rail.
6 Jan 51 - Arrived ANTUNG, continued on foot into KOREA via SINUIJU.
4 Feb 51 - Repl Regt, strength 1,700, arrived 40th Army Repl Center, located approx 16km NW of SEOUL situated in a RR tunnel (approx 1km in length) via P’YONGYANG. While enroute approx 70 killed, 60 wounded, by air strike and 150 deserted decreasing Regt strength to 1,700. While at Repl Center, troops issued 2 hand grenades each. No wpn or ammo issued. Troops were told that thy would be issued captured US rifles at assigned units. Troops were informed that they would be asgd to the 118th, 119th, and 120th Div of 40th Army.
8 Feb 51 - Approx 200 Plat Ldr, Sqd Ldr, and soldiers from Div of 40th Army arr at the center to received replacements for their respective units. Heard that approx 150-200 men would be asgd to ea Regt of the 3 Div of 40th Army. Escorted by several Ldr, PW and about 40 men departed for their asgd unit 1st Bn, 1st Co.
12 Feb 51 - 40 men arrived 1st Bn, 1st Co area. About 10 men asgd to ea Co of the 1st Bn. Received no wpn.
13 Feb 51 - 1st Co engaged by UN trp. PW captured immediately. Had no arms when attacked.

b. Organization, Strength, and Weapons:
When Repl Regt entered KOREA, only Sqd Ldr, Plat Ldr and above were armed with Jap M38 type rifles 30 rd ea. Troops carried 7 days rations (rice - 2 days; bread - 5 days) and a blanket. No wpn. At MUKDEN troops turned in summer uniforms and were issued shoes, caps, blankets and winter uniforms.

c. Morale:
Morale low due to lack of wpn, ammo, food, clothing and constant air attacks. Although frequently lectured on CCF reasons for fighting in KOREA, they were not clearly understood by troops.

d. UN PW:
While at MUKDEN (Dec 20-Jan 5) observed about 100 US and ROK PW interned at a former Jap middle school located approx 1km S of MUKDEN RR station. One half of the building was occupied by UN PW and the other half by ROK PW. According to hearsay, PW received 4 to 5 hr of Communist indoctrination daily and were well fed; 3 meals daily consisting of rice, meat, etc, and were well treated. Intention was to convert PW to Communism and only the well indoctrinated would be released. A Gd Plat of 40 men was asgd to guard PW camp which was enclosed by a 2m high barbed wire fence. Observed frequently, 2-3 guarded US PW visiting the city. Such privileges were granted upon request and the visits were for 1 to 2 hr during their free time. PW wore their original clothing and looked neat and healthy.

e. CCF Troops:
20 Dec 50 - 5 Jan 51, with exception of the MUKDEN Security Regt, strength of 2,000 and Repl Regt, no other CCF units observed or heard of in MUKDEN. Observed Security Regt frequently while in tng.
6 Jan - 4 Feb 51, while enroute from SINUIJU to 40th Army Repl Center obs no major CCF units. Heard all units were moved near the front. (for all out spring offensive)

f. Bridge Repairing:
15 Jan 51, obs a wooden bridge approx 200m in length, situated approx 30km N of P’YONGYANG being repaired by 70-80 North Korean civilians. Work was being done only at night and materials for repair were logs.
