FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0218) 26 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and voluntarily gave information concerning his unit. Being a former ROK, he considered the NKA as enemy and tried to help. Information seems reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
After escaping headed south with the intention of returning to his original organization. He observed a US patrol and voluntarily surrendered.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
After being captured by NKA, source assigned to V Corps Replacement Regt at ■ENGSAN (NK) and with this unit arrived in SAMYON-NI 9 Feb 51 where they rested until 14 Feb 51.
Replacement Regt had approx 1500 captured ROK troops who were organized and functioned like a regular infantry unit, except for carrying arms. They were used as laborers.
Bn CO, Co CO, Plat Ldr, and Sq Ldr were NKA personnel, but outside of that all troops in this Regt were ROK enlisted men. Field grade officers of the ROKA were taken to higher hq.
After intensive political training and indoctrination, the ROK troop were assigned to Div within the Corps. During the month of Jan most of ROK Replacements were assigned to 12th Div.
2 Feb 51, 6 outstanding men from each Bn were nominated (PW included) to organize a “Chokko Unit”.
Chokko Unit was organized for the purpose of sending individuals to the rear of UN lines with the mission of intermingling with civilians and persuade them to join the NKA.
14 Feb 51 Chokko Unit (30 men) and the Repl Regt moved to CHONG GOM-LI (DS2249). At this time V Corps Hq was located 12 km N of CHUNG GUM-NI.
23 Feb 51 at CHONG GUM-NI (DS2249) 2 Co of CCF with pack horses, carrying ammunition, observed heading south.
0300 hr 24 Feb 51, 7 men of “Chokko Unit” (PW included) deserted and headed south.
251800 Feb 51, observed 2 groups of 3-5 men each posted as guard on top of ridge (DS3036)
260900 Feb 51, at KUNGOL (DS3036) learned from a farmer that 7th Div was deployed in the area. Also told by the same source that troops were living in houses at MARA■-GOL (DS3037) and that he cooked rice to feed 25-30 guards posted on ridge.
While hiding in hills (DS3136), PW observed a US patrol, reconnoiting in valleys between the two ridges 261500 Feb 51. PW came out of hiding and surrendered vic of SOUN-NI (DS2835)

b. Clothing:
All wore ROK winter uniform.

c. Food:
Insufficient; troops fed only 1-2 times a day. Rice is confiscated from the villages and polished by the troops.

d. Morale:
Low, because troops are forced to fight, not given freedom, and always watched closely by the NKA.

e. Contagious Disease:
None.

f. Physical Condition:
Good.
