2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was wounded in his left hand.
He was very cooperative. However, he was confused about dates and places traveled. Information seems reliable.

II Corps: 9th, 10th, 27th, 2nd, and 31st Div.
9th Div: 3 Inf Regt, Recon Co, Sig Co, Engr Co, Med Sta, Supply Co, and Guard Co.
2nd Regt: 3 Rifle Bn, Engr Co, Recon Plat, Sig Plat, Guard Plat, Med Sta, Supply Co.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
As of 3 Feb 51, 1st, and 2nd Regt of 9th Div were loc at SO UN NI (DS285358), and 3rd Regt, 9th Div was loc SANG HUNG NI (DS319416). These three Regt gathered at SANG HUNG NI, 3 Feb 51. 1st and 3rd Regt proceeded to UNGYO RI (DS3742). Since PW was ill, his plat 1dr told him to join 2nd Regiment later, at NOKKOL (DS385259).
After PW was captured, he heard from a fellow PW of 3rd Regt that 9th Div Hq and all its Regt will meet at TUNNAE MYON (DS320550).
As a number of Engr Co, PW did not see any ground nines being laid. Nor did he know of any mine fields.
He had not seen any CCF troops.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted into Independent Unit 7 Sep 50 at KANGGYE (BA9639). Received no training.
The Indep Unit, composed of 300 recruits came to HUPYONG NI (CT3875) Nov 50 and was dissolved into 9th Div. PW was placed into 1st Sqd, 2nd Plat, Engr Co, 2nd Regt, 9th Div. Received no training.

PW was captured by ROK 27th Regiment personnel while trying to escape from the hut in which he was resting.

7. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
PW received 1891/30 rifle and 100 rd of ammo at HUPYONG NI Nov 50, when he was put into 9th Div.
While traveling in NORTH KOREA, Supply Unit received food from village committee warehouses; in SOUTH KOREA, food as forcibly taken from farm villagers.
PW ate an average of two meals per day.

8. SIGNAL:
Regt to Div: Wireless
Bn to Regt: Telephone
Co to Bn: Runners
Since communication equipment was lacking, runners were used at most levels.

9. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale in Engr Co was low because of constant arty fire and UN air bombing.

10. UN PW:
PW saw 12 ROK soldiers who were captured at YONGWOL. These men forced to accompany 9th Div. They were last seen 3 Feb 51 at SANG HUNG NI.

11. MEDICAL:
There was no contagious disease in PW Co.
Troops had not received any type of immunization.
He say 3 cases of frost bitten feet in 2nd Regt. No treatment was administered. They were left behind as unit moved on.

12. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily?
a. PW did not know why he did not surrender voluntarily to the ROK troops. He heard shots, so he ran.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
a PW saw UN leaflets at various places.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. Leaflets, in general, stated: “We have no desire to kill you. If you surrender we will not kill you but give ample food and warm clothing.”
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. PW had doubts as to the leaflets’ statements because the officers issued counter propaganda constantly.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts?
a. PW believed others felt the same way.
