2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative; but because his battalion was reduced to 35 men and was isolated he was not able to furnish much information.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH:
4th Field Army: 38th, 39th, 40th and 50th and other Armies.
38th Army: 112th, 113th, 114th Rifle Div and Arty Div.
112th Division: 334th, 335th, 336th Rifle Regt, Pack Howitzer Co, Security Guard Co and other attached units.
336th Regt 3 Rifle Bn, Recon Co, Arty Co, Sig Plat.
2nd Battalion: 3 Rifle Co and Heavy Weapons Co.
5th Company: 3 Rifle Plat and 60mm Mortar Squad.
2nd Platoon: 3 Squads.
Squad: 7 men.

PW battalion has been wiped out. O/a 28 Jan 51 there were 35 troops left in the battalion. Most of the KIA were caused by aircraft.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
O/a 28 Jan 51 the PW Bn, consisting of 35 troops, was in mountain 12 kms W of SUWON (CS2528).
Troops were last observed digging foxholes in preparation for a stand.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted in Nov 45 by the CNA and assigned to the 71st Army, 91st Div Hq stationed at SSUPING (西平), as a cook.
Feb 49, the 91st CNA Division surrendered to the CCF. PW was a prisoner of the CCF for about 6 months prior to being integrated into the 112th Division.
Jul 49 the 112th Division was transferred to MUKDEN as occupation troops.
Jan 50 the PW and 6 others were sent to KWANGHSI SHENG as bodyguards for the procommunist governor.
Jul 50 the PW and 6 others were called back to their parent unit at MUKDEN.
Aug 50 the 112th Division departed for ANTUNG. PW remained in ANTUNG about 10 days before his regiment moved into KOREA via SINUIJU (XE1839).
From SINUIJU 336th Regt followed the YALU River E for several hundred kilometers prior to moving S through central KOREA, by-passing P'YONGYANG.
From vicinity P'YONGYANG regiment marched S until it arrived vicinity SUWON o/a 23 Jan 51.
Prior to arriving vie SUWON Regt was broken into battalions.
27 Jan 51 PW Bn (35 troops left from an original of 750) was 12 km W of SUWON.
On the same day PW and three others deserted their units to surrender. While attempting to make their way to UN lines two of the deserters were wounded by strafing aircraft.
29 Jan 51 PW made his way to UN lines with a surrender leaflet.

6. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
PW unit confiscated food from villages along their route of march.
PW unit had not received a resupply of ammo since Aug 48.

8. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
PW battalion's morale and battle effectiveness was at its lowest for the following reasons:
Only 35 troops remaining out of original 750.
MAO's promise of plenty of everything did not materialize.

9. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. Yes. Because of the lack of food and being disgusted with MAO's promises.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. Yes. PW was not able to read but his friend explained that when surrendering, they were to make their way to UN positions over secondary roads.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. Negative.
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. Negative.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
a. Negative.
