2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative, however, information on Arty was limited because he did not receive any Arty training nor was he in combat.
Information seems reliable.

 9th Co and the 1st Plat remained at YONGBYON (YE4010) because the Plat had one 122mm gun and the gun was not able to go south because of the lack of transportation.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS: (As of 25 Jan 51)
2nd and 3rd Battalion CP (22nd Arty Regt) were at the foot of a high mountain approx 4 km Southeast of SOSA (CS0350).
47th Div Hq was at SOSA.
D/u Jan 51, when the Arty Regt arrived at SOSA, the 1st Arty Bn headed for INCHON (BS9050) to protect the sea coast from possible UN forces amphibious invasion.
PW did not see other NKA units.
Jan 51, when the Arty Regt arrived at SOSA, PW heard from his Plat Leader that, although they would be away from SOSA, when the time for battle came, the Regiment would fight at SOSA.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted into the Recon Sqd, Hq Plat, 9th Co, 3rd Bn, 22nd Arty Regt, 47th Division 3 Oct 50 at NUMYON.
Received no training.
While travelling from SAKCHU (XE7472) to the point of capture (CS1032), the following places were passed.

25 Jan 51 two soldiers deserted and voluntarily surrendered to the Turkish Brigade at CS1032.
While at 4km Southeast of SOSA, PW hauled rice and at times was instructed in directing Arty fire from OP to the guns through the Signal Squad. No actual practice, only lectures.

6. PERSONALITIES:
Kim, Chon Kyong (金川京), Jr Lt, Plat Idr, Hq Plat.

7. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
PW last received 795 rd of SMG ammo at SAKCHU.
He saw only 17 or 18 boxes of 76mm ammo, (4 in one box) at a point 4km southeast of SOSA 25 Jan 51.
While at SAKCHU food was brought into the area for the 2nd and 3rd Battalions from INCHON by snow sleds.

8. ARMOR, ARTILLERY AND AIRCRAFT:
T/O & E for the Arty Bn called for 4 x 122mm howitzers and 8 x 76mm guns. (Two guns per plat or one squad of 10 men.)
PW heard that the plat header, who was a former sqd ldr, had this training at SINUIJU(XE1839).
PW Regiment was never in combat.
Although PW Bn was strafed by UN Airplanes during night marches., no arty pieces, were destroyed. During day light hours, guns were camouflaged with grass. No attack, during day light hours, from UN ground troops.
PW heard that the 76mm gun’s maximum range was 6,000 meters.
PW heard that during battle, the Bn CO, Hq Plat leader, Sig Sqd Ldr, Recon Sqd Ldr and Wireless Sqd Ldr go to the OP, and direct the fire of each battery.
PW did not receive specific arty training nor was he in combat.

10. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale in PW Btry was low because most of them were elderly men who did not believe in Communism. Most of them were waiting for the opportunity to desert.

11. MEDICAL:
They have not received any immunization since they came into the Army.
There was no sickness or frost bitten feet in his company. They usually found horses in which to wars themselves.

12. OCF:
D/in Dec 50 at NUMYON, PW saw great number of CCF marching troops. Since it was night, he could not say how many there were.

13. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW voluntarily surrendered because he was disgusted with the war.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. PW saw UN leaflets at SAKCHU Dec 50, but did not hear any loudspeaker broadcasts.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. The leaflet stated that the Peoples’ Army personal should surrender to the UN forces and he treated well and be given good food.
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. It made no difference what the leaflet stated because he wanted to come to South Korea long before, this war started.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
a. PW felt that except for the Co CO and Plat leaders, the others want to surrender to the UN Forces.
