2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was captured while treating American wounded by elements of 19th RCT. Cooperative and of average intelligence. Information obtained is considered fairly reliable. PW was a student prior to entering service. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
18 Apr 46: PW volunteered for the Chinese Nationalist Security Police at WOOCHUNSHIEN. Dispatched to SUPINGCHIE. Served for approx 9 months at this location.
8 Jan 47: Captured by elements of CCF at TALIENTUN. Immediately confined to PW enclosure at TUNWHOO and received Communist indoctrination for approx 1 year. Approx 400 other former Chinese Nationalist troops confined at this enclosure.
28 Jan 48: Assigned to 38th Army, 114th Div, 342nd Regt at CHUTAI-SHIEN. Received 6 months medical aid training.
Jul 48: Upon completion of training departed south for HUNANSON via CHUNGDO, KWANSHI, WINGNAN and KUICHU. Trip took approx 6 months. Departed HUNANSON heading north via KAIFUNG, TIENJUN, SAN HAIKWAN, CHINCHOW, SONYONG, KAIYUEN-SHIEN on Jan 49. Return trip took approx 1 1/2 years.
20 Jul 50: Arrived in KAIYUEN-SHIEN. At this location the 38th Corps engaged in mountain combat tactics for approx 3 months.
10 Oct 50: Departed KAIYUEN-SHIEN on foot for MANP’OJIN (KOREA) via SUPINGCHIE, SHIAN, TUNWHA. Arrived in MANP’OJIN on or about 14 Oct 50. From MANP’OJIN headed south-east via HUICHON BV6849. KUJANG-DONG BV4617, KAECHON YD5595. At KUJANG-DONG encountered UN forces on 21 Oct 50. Proceeded south and arrived vic 38th parallel 24 Dec 50. Enroute received air attack. Casualties very light. Immediately upon arrival the 38th Army was deployed along the 38th parallel in defensive positions.

b. PW’s Unit:
38th Army composed of 112th, 113th, 114th divisions. 114th Div composed of 340th, 341st and 342nd Regts. Each Regt composed of 3 Inf Bns and 2 FA Batteries attached. Each Bn consists of 3 Rifle Cos and 1 HMG Co. Strength of 38th Army approx 40,000. Strength of each division approx 11,000. Also service companies attached to the 38th Army (Signal, Medical & OM). Each FA Btry composed of 120 men. Approx 20 medical aidman assigned to each Regt. No tank unit attached to the 38th Army. 38th Army equipped with mortars and field guns (cal & no unk).

Weapons of other unit unknown. PW stated that 38th Army is composed of seasoned troops. Most feared by the Chinese Nationalist Army.

c. Intentions:
Mission of 38th Corps was to capture and occupy SEOUL. Political officer informed troops on 252400 Dec 50 that the CCF will start an all out offensive on 010001 Jan 51.

d. Food & Ammo:
Food was locally procured. Each man supplied with approx 110 rds of ammo. Ammo insufficient.

e. Knowledge of Other Units in KOREA.
PW stated that 40th, 42nd, 55th and 60th Corps also deployed along the 38th parallel. Stated that the 38th, 39th, 40th Corps comprised the 13th Army Group. 4th Field Army composed of 13th Army Group and 3 other Army Groups. Designation unknown to PW.

f. Knowledge of US PsW:
PW observed approx 10 U.S. PsW at KAECHON on or about 23 Oct 50. No wounded observed. Disposition unknown.

g. Morale:
PW stated that 2/3 of troops in his unit have no desire to fight. Due to lack of medical supplies many have severe colds. Approx 50 percent of troops suffering from frost-bitten feet.

h. UN Propaganda Leaflet:
PW saw UN propaganda leaflets dropped by air vic HUICHON on or about 19 Oct 50. After reading leaflet PW was determined to surrender at the first opportunity.

4. GENERAL:
Most Feared by CCF Troops:
Air attacks (bombing & strafing) and Arty.
