2. ASSESSMENT:
While advancing from ONSANDONG hill near HYONP’UNG (1140-1410) to CHIDONG hill, located 1 km to the E, the 1st and HMG Cos were heavily bombarded by US artillery. PW surrendered on 31 Aug 50, together with 15 men of the 1st Co, to the US Forces approx 1 hour after this artillery bombardment started.

 PW heard that this Lt Col had been a member of the CCF for a long time.

 PW heard that Bn CO joined the Korean Independence Army in MANCHURIA. He was killed in action at OH SANG DONG hill of HYONP’UNG by US artillery fire on 21 Aug 50.

Capability of Unit:
The unit faced a shortage of provisions and experienced men. The ceaseless aircraft attacks, especially strafing, lowered the morale of the men who were quite fatigued from their long march to the front. PW observed at least 15 casualties per day in hie unit for approx 8 days prior to his surrender.

Supply:
Food - Foodstuffs were carried across the NAKTONG River from the West during the nights by soldiers. Soldiers usually had only one meal per day.
Ammunition - Each man was supplied 100 rounds of rifle ammunition when unit departed P'YONGYANG.
Equipment - No equipment was supplied after the unit departed P'YONGYANG.

Training:
PW received one month basic training in Apr 50 at the 2nd MINCH’ONG (NKDYML) Training School located at SUKCH'ON. PW was member of the 6th Training Sub-unit, 1st Bn, 1st Co, 3rd Plt, 4th Sqd. Following completion of training, PW was given a rifle (M1891/30) and this training unit was converted into a military unit as part of the 10th Div, 29th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co, 3rd Plt, 6th Sqd. They were then ordered to transfer to P’YONGYANG, Here the students of the 2nd MINCH'ONG Training School were called troops of the 10th Div and were engaged in combat training until they received orders to depart for S Korea on the night of 14 Jul 50.

Present Location:
Main force of the 29th Rest was located at OK SANDONG Hill located on E side of the NAKTONG River near HYONP’UNG.
Main force of the 10th Div was said to be located on OK SANDONG Hill and SONGDONG Hill. located on the W side or the NAKTONG River. They were waiting to cross the NAKTONG River.

Type of Armor Employed:
Observed approx 7 destroyed T-34/95 medium tanks at P’YONGTAEK (平澤) on 2 Aug 50.

Troops of Other Nationalities:
PW observed 3 Russian Military Advisors (1 Lt Col and 2 Capts) when they were on maneuvers just out of P’YONGYANG. PW’s unit was inspected by these Russian Advisors just before departure from P’YONGYANG for the battle front.

Condition of Terrain behind his line:
Road - Road was in fair condition in the vicinity of the NAKTONG River.
Railroad - RR was in good condition in the vicinity of CH'ONAN.
Bridges - No badly damaged bridges were observed.

Political and Subversive Activities:
Cruelty and barbarism are principles of the ROK Puppet Govt and its policies are based thereon. Therefore we, the Liberation Army, must destroy these outrageous evils.
Pvt HAN, Je Hyon and Pvt LEE, Yong Ho were believed to be informers for the NKPA intelligence. Their duties were believed to be the reporting to the intelligence section on political subjects and or problem discussed by the soldiers.

All weapons had markings with Russian characters but details were unknown. Clothing was believed to be produced in NK.

Miscellaneous:
1. P’YONGYANG was attacked almost daily by US aircraft but PW did not observe any heavy damage on 26, 28 Jul 50, when He left there. Citizens af P’YONGYANG were quite surprised to see the US aircraft make direct hits on military installations and not damage many of the civilian homes in the vicinity.
2. 18 x B-29 bombers flew over P’YONGYANG on 26 Jun 50, but no bombs were dropped.
3. On 27 Jun 50, about 20 x B-26 type bombers attacked P’YONGYANG and completely damaged the KOKEAN SUGAR CO which was said to be the largest sugar refinery installation in the Orient and which also supplied all sugar for the NKPA. PW stated that this sugar company was completely destroyed and was seen burning for two days.
4. At noon, 28 Jun 50, approx 10 x F-80 type fighters attacked a gun power company for approx 1 hour and caused grave damage. PW observed smoke from this burning gun power company covering the whole city of P'YONGYANG for about 20 hours after attack.
