PW and 4 others surrendered to elements of the 5th RCT. In good physical condition at interrogation. Cooperative, but below average intelligence, and could not remember place names, and dates. Information should be assessed accordingly. PW was a former CNA soldier but was given a medical discharge in Jun 50 due to tuberculosis. Not recommended for further interrogation.
a. Chronology:
Conscripted into the CCF in Sep 50 at SANDONG HSIEN LIEN-CHUN. PW does not know when he departed CHINA, crossed the Manchurian border, or in what strength they crossed. Does not remember place names, or dates on movements after crossing the Manchurian border except that o/a 7 Mar 51 3d Bn was approx 40 km north of 38th parallel. O/a 13 Mar 51 3d Bn left this location and marched for 4 nights, arriving at unk location 17 2200 Mar 51. At 2300 hours the same night, 1st Plat was dispatched to 8th Co which was located vic CS 570780. 2d and 3d platoons were dispatched to the 7th and 9th Companies. on 190500 Mar 51 PW position was being shelled by UN Forces. PW 2d Spd received casualties of 2 WIA, and at 1100 hours UN Troops began attacking PW position. At 1400 hours PW position was overrun and 8th Co withdrew. Instead of withdrawing with 8th Co, PW and 4 others abandoned their weapons and stayed in their foxholes. When UN Forces arrived, PW with 4 others, surrendered.

d. Intention:
8th Company’s political officer told the company that their mission was to defend their position.
e. Food and Ammo:
Company was fed twice daily since entering KOREA. He has never seen food being locally procured by company. Heard from company officers that food is brought from TUNGBEI, MANCHURIA.
Unit brought 1000 rd per MG, when they entered KOREA. Another 1000 rd was issued per MG approx 20 days ago.
f. UN PW:
Approx 1 month ago observed 7 UN PW N of 38th parallel who were being taken north.
g. Leaflets:
Picked up leaflet o/a 9 Mar 51. He surrendered with it to UN Forces.
h. Broadcast:
Heard broadcast 17 and 18 March 51 but, due to being inaudible, had no effect.
i. Reinforcements:
O/a 28 Feb 51 heard from friends that 100 replacements arrived at 1st Bn.
